I've been Playing Golf for: 2 months, used to play 15 years ago as a young boy but just got back into it

My current handicap index or average score is: average score is 100(par 70)

My typical ball flight is: pull slice/straight

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: just trying to get better form and ball striking

I would work on your posture a bit. You stand really close to the ball. Try to get a hands width between the butt end of the club and your belt buckle.

I would work on a centered pivot. You just raise your arms up and get no hip turn at all.

I would work on just being more dynamic in using your hips properly.

Couple of quick and easy setup changes you can make today that should help you out:

1) Adopt a more athletic and dynamic posture by standing further away from the ball, getting rid of hunched shoulders, having a straighter spine and having hands a little further from body. You simply cant play good golf with posture like yours.

2) Have a wider stance (feet further apart) and flare your toes slightly. Will help with balance, stability and using your legs more dynamically.

3) Once you've widened your stance, have the ball a little further forward (closer to left foot) and at address have your hands slightly ahead of ball (except with driver). This will help you sweep the ball a little better, get more height and discourage a steep angle of attack. The hands forward at address is simply a sort of 'preset' impact position all good players do.

I imagine fixing these issues will improve a lot of things in your actual swing automatically.

As for your swing itself, It's far too much arms and hands and not enough core and legs. You also hang back on your right side through impact, which is probably due to the fact it looks like you're trying to help the ball in the air - a big no no if you ever want to strike it well and get distance. Also you swing far too much across the ball out-to-in, which will only cause pulls and slices:

1) Feel like your whole torso (shoulders, chest and stomach) rotates WITH your arms in sync on your backswing. Once you cant rotate it any more, stop, as that is a complete backswing and any further will result in your arms becoming disconnected. Chances are to you this will feel like a much shorter backswing, maybe even a half swing. But that is just a feeling and on camera you'll see you'll actually have a bigger backswing than you think.

2) Try to have your hands ahead of the clubhead at impact, feeling like your hitting down through the ball. With your weight on your right foot this will be impossible to do so make sure you're shifting your weight onto your left side on the downswing. A good drill for you would be to hit some balls with your right heel off the ground throughout.

3) As for your path, try to come at the ball much more from the inside, like you're trying to push the ball to the right of your target. At first you'll hit some big pushes and push fades, but your hands will quickly adjust to close the face more through impact. This is the only way to get a draw and cure a slice.

Your grip is weak and probably palmy, so I would fix that first.

To start hitting the ball more solid and swing less across it, you have to change a few things, mostly with your pivot.

Hips and head move to the right.

And this makes it hard for them to be forward enough on the downswing. Can see how that effects your ability to get the shaft leaning forward at impact.

Some good threads for you to check out.

Here's what you need to do:

1. Fix your grip.

2. Turn both feet out and widen the stance a little.

3. Turn the hips in place on the backswing.

4.  Shift the hips and weight forward on the downswing.

For now I would just focus on 1-3 above.

thank you mvmac I really appreciate the screen shoots you took and used to show the difference. I will be working on those 4 things for a sometime and then post another video to see if I have improved any.

Thank you for taking the time to help me!

    • Same here. Seems quite a few of my fundamentals had strayed and Erik had to get me back on track. It was kind of surprising how bad I had gotten off.
    • I would like to point out I was not complaining about hot summers;  rather, I enjoy them.  It's the coming cold cold winter I'm about to face that worries me.
    • From late 2022 until a few months ago, I barely played (maybe two dozen rounds, total, and only four rounds in 2024).  I had my first lesson in ages (Skillest, with Erik) and grip was part of it -- mine really did get into a bad spot, and I had to (and still have to) practice the new one.  It still feels odd, but that's a good thing when adjusting (otherwise I'm probably doing the previous).   I'm going back into the office for the first time since then and I'm tempted to take a small section of pipe, keep it in a desk drawer, and periodically take it out to practice my grip.
    • Great episode on GAPs. I agree 100%, this needs to be consistent. It is something you have complete control over to a high level of repeatability and precision. It is such low hanging fruit as well.  My own tendencies.  Grip - Can get too strong. I tend to not get much grip with my left pinky, and the grip can feel like it slips more into the palm. I mess around with grip size and tap wraps. I wonder if I need to get away from a big taper.  Stance - Use to be too far right. I noticed, for the first time ever, I was aiming too far left on the course last week. It was like 5-10 yards left of the target, not 20-30 yards right. Overcorrection. 🤣 It is getting better.  Posture - Way better now that I stretch and work on mobility. I could tell years ago that if I tried to keep my knees less bent, get more on the balls of my feet, I felt a stretch in my calves and hamstrings. Now, I don't, and it helps. I think people might avoid that stretch feeling because it might feel unnatural. I used to be head up as well, looking too much down the bridge of my nose. I still can catch myself doing that, especially on shorter irons. I think I have average ankle mobility. I do have to use elevated heels when I squat at the gym, or I tend to fall over forward.  I agree, if you are not practicing this then you can become lax. For about the entire first half of this season, I was just waltzing up to the ball without aiming. I still catch myself being lazing. I have to step back and actually aim. I think adding this into your practice sessions is easy. Just do it before ever rep at the range. Just make it a conscious effort on the course.  For the tee shot, the only time you can kind of use an alignment aid (other divot or maybe something is lying on the ground). I tend to use that to help me aim. I try to imagine a straight line that I align my body to.
