I'm not picking on his swing he's a very good player...but he has this strange move latterly to his right foot THEN he starts his backswing..I haven't seen anything like that before..He has a quick swing....I wonder what this move is doing for him?

It starts his backswing.

Jim Furyk has a different back swing as well...   But as a famous golfer once said "the only part of the swing that matters is the 6 inches behind the ball and the 6 inches after it."

Ya I know about Furyk swing...but Stensons swing he moves back then stops then resumes the takeaway...I'm wondering if it's a way to get behind the ball?

I realize that.. but it's the opposite direction than I ever seen before... people that make a big move as Stenson makes it's toward the hole not away from the hole as Stensons move

It's just a trigger. He might not even be aware that he does it.

I think it's a good question, which makes me stare to the flat screen every time he is on TV. I find his swing very interesting as well. It is like pre setting presurre on his right foot and from there, to blast forward. I am wondering if it would benefit me with the driver/3w, or in a broader sense, would help Joe Avarage. It is like a trigger for setting off. I tend to agree it would be some kind of mental trigger. And being a pro, he is probably trained it so much, that it is part of him. But I would be happy to say that at a certain point he started training for it.

I'd be very surprised if he's not aware of it. I believe the pros on that level have dissected every part of their swing.

Google has a lot about Stenson's swing.

Not always. Some pros don't want to know about their swing, for fear of losing it or screwing it up or whatever.

It is interesting. I move laterally like that too but he pauses. The pause is what gets me, I can't do that. He can really smack a 3 wood though.

It seems as though he also lowers his body a wee bit too.

Looks like he is going from the" looking at the hole stance" to the" ok now I'm going to pull the trigger stance".  My guess is that he has found  position of his body to be the most successful at producing his best shots and just returns to that stance when he starts to swing the club.

Probably is a focus to really 'set' his weight to the inside of the R foot.

Move might possibly have been a partial cause of his recent knee surgery, though.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
