Yesterday I went to the range and the guy next to me was getting a lesson.  As I was hitting balls I kept hearing the instructor basically yelling at his student, about pretty much everything.

The student was probably in his late 40s or so and was very timid.  The instructor was berating him all lesson long and was just saying "wrong!" or "look at me!!" instead of giving the student any drills or actual good advice to work on.

It was pretty painful to watch and I felt bad for the guy.  He needs to find a new instructor, that actually knows the game.  The instructor at one point asked the student to read the flex on his driver, which was regular.  The instructor said "R, for Wrong!!  You need to be hitting an XS shaft."  While this student barely swung in the 90s on his driver....

Does anybody else have any other stories of terrible instructors that they overheard?  I wanted to tell the guy he should find somebody else but knew that wouldn't go well!

I've not heard any instructors that bad, but I've heard some parents giving some pretty horrible advice to their kids. Having them swing full size clubs that are way too long for them and whatnot... It's pretty sad because they are setting up those kids with bad habits that will take a lot of work to reverse when they are older, if the even care to keep playing.

I heard a pro put the moves on his female student. He said stuff like, "You have very well defined arms. Do you work out?" Very subtle. I'm sure the pro I was working with heard. Didn't faze him one bit. Probably not the first time. Nothing to do w/bad advice but makes for a very awkward lesson.

Yeah if the kid struggles and isn't having any fun they are not going to keep playing...

So, recently I was in a stall next to a mother and daughter pair at the driving range. The mom was giving her daughter instructions to the point that the girl was almost in tears. Then the mom started hitting balls with an equally terrible swing, and her daughter started giving her instructions. The daughter's spirits started picking up a little while watching her mom struggle. The mom got frustrated hitting, and made her daughter hit more balls and she was nearly in tears again. . .

Just then the instructor comes along and starts giving her lessons while she was already upset, and tells them pretty much exactly what the mother and daughter told each other to do. Not sure if the instruction was bad or if the students were bad or if both were bad. :-P

It was definitely entertaining. I just kept to myself and hit balls with an occasional involuntary smirk which I fended off with a shot/cough sequence, lots of them. :-D

Was next to a guy on the driving range the other day, whose buddy was with him. Every single swing, 'whoops, you lifted your head up.' Had my eye twitching.

Isn't that the sole cause of every bad shot?! :-P

Wow, he should be flocked and then fired, or fired and then flocked.

At my range, there is a lady instructor who gives out non-stop instructions even for the 1st time lesson taker.   She should have taken a lesson on how to teach.   How in the world anyone who picks up a club for the 1st time is going to digest a 30 - 45 min of non-stop instruction?    I've seen her play and she really sucked.  Another instructor at the course let slip how bad she is as an instructor.    I think she is a daughter of the course owner.

Seems the worst advice/instruction is always given by a well-meaning amateur. If they attempt give me advice, I tell them to shut their pie hole.

But if the person IS a pro, I shut my pie hole and listen.

I bet they loved that lesson and can't wait to get back.

Makes you wonder why they are out there at all, if both are crying and struggling so much.

Yeah, that kind of makes me wonder why 99% of golfers come back for more. . . :-D

Not excluding myself of course!
