I need to get back to work on this - I've still been playing so much golf I haven't had a chance to practice my full-swing priority piece at all.  I have been practicing short game and putting intermittently, but not enough to actually get better.

This (from Game Golf) sorta summarizes where I'm at right now:

I'm hitting my driver really well (enough to get me to single digits per strokes gained)...putting OK, considering...but my short game and my irons are a weak spot.

With the colder weather coming, I'll be doing more range work, and hope to get the full swing improved over the winter.

If not...I'll just keep playing a lot of golf.  :)

I got out to the range today for my first swings in months.  Nothing fancy, just focused on gripping the club properly and trying to make good contact.  I actually hit the ball solidly and it felt good (for it being 45 degrees).  Felt good.

I've still been playing a lot of golf, and not really practicing.  I am focusing on two full-swing items when playing:

  • Finishing my backswing / full shoulder turn
  • Proper grip (still a recurring issue for me)

When I do those two correctly, I have the ability to play pretty well.

I'm also focusing on two things that lead to a lot of lost strokes in the short game:

  • Shoulder turn when hitting partial wedges, rather then getting "armsy" and hitting a lot of fat/thin shots
  • Hip turn in my pitching motion...same thing

I'd love to have time to practice more and really work on the full swing, but in the meantime, my scores and play are improving because of the stuff above.

First post here in a year - eww.

Had an awesome session with @iacas on GEARS a couple weeks ago.  The good news is that I've finally gotten to a point where I don't need to worry about my shoulder/hip turn - was definitely doing that enough.

Current priorities:

  • Grip (again, as always and forever)
  • Getting my hips shifted "back and back" in my backswing (90% of my full swing practice focuses on this)

Next step will be to shallow the swing by throwing my hands out, "towards the plant", in my downswing (10%).

I'm still messing around with the GEARS data...it's frigging awesome...but wanted to post this as my internal monologue and practice.

Nearly two years later...I haven't practiced once.  I've been playing a lot, and enjoying it, but just haven't really thought about working on my swing to actually get better until the past couple weeks.  Honestly, it's been inspired a little by "teaching" a couple brand-new golfers to play, and seeing (and helping) them try to get better.

I've scheduled a lesson with @iacas in Erie...I'm planning on actually getting back in the habit of improvement.  We'll see how it goes.

Took a really good lesson with @iacas in Erie last week, as my swing had completely gone off the rails (particularly with the driver).

Two main pieces I'm working on: a backswing piece, and a downswing piece to try to get my path from being so over-the-top.  Will post more here as I get to practice over the next couple weeks.  The backswing piece alone has already made things noticeably better.

    • Day 126: another busy day, so just did some mirror work. Checking set up and backswing and working on a few downswing feels.
    • Day 310 - Working on my follow-through. Higher chest, belt towards the target. Small swings at first, building to a fuller swing (still not thrilled with my short backswing).
    • Day 201 (19 Nov 24) - Walked the back nine at Minnesott today, played the “white” tees with the persimmon woods and bladed irons.  It’s a challenge I really like as the clubs are shorter in overall distances.  It really forces me focus on the value of the approach game.     Somehow yesterday’s post did not load / so it’s above.  Today (Day 202) I did some backyard short yardage work - 7i dink  and rolls, 9i chips and 50deg pitches - working to get it in before the rain started around noon.
    • Day 51 - 2024-11-20 Played nine holes of Sanctuary Moon with a 6I while pausing in the backswing and otherwise just practicing. If you're into Star Wars, or don't actively hate it… this is worth checking out.
