I guess the title says it all. I'm a brand new golfer and just joined the forum today. I have been offered two sets of older used irons from friends. The G2s and HP5s are in the same good condition. I've played with both and, well, I'm so new you could probably put anything in my hand and it would feel as bad

Given a choice between the two and all other things being equal, which would you go with and why?

Thanks.

All things equal I'd probably go with the Ping G2s if only because I'm more familiar with Ping.

The PINGs are in the PGA value guide, whereas the Tour Edges are not. Go with the PING

That seemed too obvious.

PING is a well-known brand while TourEdge is not. From what I've been able to pick up searching around, TourEdge seems to be one of those lower-cost beginner sets. The G2's original MSP was close to $900; the HP5, about $300.

My initial impression was G2. But I've learned in other areas that brand recognition and higher price, which seem to go together, don't necessarily mean best, or best for me as a beginner. That's the reason for looking for some advice.

You'd be hard pressed to find a company that makes better clubs for beginners than Ping. It's been a company known for it's game improvement irons, which the G series is.

Yeah, these clubs both seem geared towards the GI side with their thick soles, and they're both about a decade old, and yet the PINGs have good resale value. And, honestly, they look like they could be a 2015 release. The G2s still look modern and fit PING's design ethos.

I'm a Tour Edge guy and I'm gonna say go with the Pings... If it was an Exotics model of irons or one of the newer Bazooka models, I'd say Tour Edge... Tour Edge just does their own research and development, and their Exotics line is usually limited runs, and made from top of the line stuff... Tour Edge basically has three price points that they are focusing at: HP/Reaction line: Boxed sets for Beginners at a low price point $300-$400 for a 12 club set with bag. Bazooka/Hot Launch line: Their biggest sellers, the target consumer Tour Edge is going after, less than $200 for a driver, $100-$120 per Fairway Wood, $80 a hybrid, and a set of 8 irons at around $300-$400 with steel shafts... So in other words... $1000-$1200 for a full set. Exotics line: Tour Edge's most expensive line... Drivers run as much as $500, but typically $200-$400, Fairways $150-$300, Hybrids: $120-$200, Irons $500-$1,000, Wedges: $100 each, Putters: $250-$300 new... A full set of Exotics up and down the bag will run you around $2,500 (unless you buy on clearance and only spend $750ish)... That's basically an overview of Tour Edge... But there will always be one thing Tour Edge will always have over PING... All clubs you purchase within 10 years of purchase from Tour Edge... Can be registered for a LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY basically if you snap the head off of your 7i in knee high rough on the second Hole tomorrow, Tour Edge will send you a new one, as long as it's within what the club is meant to be used for... They have better Customer Service than PING, by a lot...

The Shafts in the Ping G2 irons have a low kick point and get the ball up in the air easily. Some of the Tour Edge irons come with True Temper Dynalite Shafts which also will get the ball up easily. Tour Edge are centered in Canada.

The G2 irons are less bulky. I play with Ping irons but use Exotics woods and hybrids.

That is pure rubbish, Tour Edge is centered in Batavia, Illinois, not in Canada, do better research... Why in the hell do you think about if we have a Stableford tournament we were gonna do it around the John Deere Classic and have Tour Edge sponsor it?

As @Club Rat said, TE has a low end of boxed sets, but also had a high-end line of its Exotics. The Exotics FWs have a sprinkling of players on the pro tour who use them. Here's a story on TE -

@WUTiger I think people just don't realize how good Tour Edge's equipment really is... @markk your comparison isn't really fair to how good Tour Edge really is. The PING G2 vs Tour Edge Reaction or HP series is like comparing a Ferrari to a Gremlin... Now you compare the G2 to the Exotics EX-1 from 2005 then you have a fair comparison... I wasn't aware @Club Rat was in this forum

I noticed @WUTiger had mentioned that I had commented in this thread, no biggie.
But glad to know he speaks highly of me.

Wish I could reflect on these clubs, but I'm always up for reading about equipment of all types.

Carry on, Club Rat over and out.

@Club Rat As much of a Tour Edge guy that I am...

PING G2 vs TourEdge HP5. PING G2 wins every time

PING G30 vs TourEdge E8 irons is a virtual tie...

PING G30 vs TourEdge EXd irons Tour Edge wins...

It's like comparing a Ferrari to a Yugo @markk, take the PING G2... Honestly if it was a Bazooka model (JMax Progressive, QL)... I'd be saying save your money and play Tour Edge... As you are just starting our wonderful game go with the PING G2... As you progress in this game, don't overlook Tour Edge, their equipment is as good as the big OEM's.

Brandt Snedeker won the FedEx cup playing a Tour Edge Exotics CB4 3-wood. Matt Kuchar played a CB2 4-wood for the longest time... Tour Edge doesn't pay anyone to endorse their clubs... The pros who use them, use them because they work... Though their package sets aren't the greatest quality, they are possibly the best package sets that are around. WHY? Three words LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY. The face of your driver can cave in on the first tee tomorrow, you call or email Tour Edge and send the Driver to them, they will send you another one free...

In conclusion, go with the G2's, When you get better, consider Tour Edge... They have good stuff, until about 2008 I had never heard of them, except of the Bazooka Driver which I didn't realize they made... I stumbled across them myself, I love their woods and hybrids, their irons are great... He's still behind on wedges and Putters but he's getting there. Not bad for a guy who started Tour Edge in his garage.

My bust, guys. I had re-read an old Clubs, Grips thread with Club Rat comments earlier that day, and was still imbued with Club Rat's wisdom when I responded to this thread.

@Club Rat oh mighty Club Rat, is much wiser than @WUTiger and @onthehunt526 and we know a bit about Tour Edge, but we defer all things Golf club related to @Club Rat the almighty.

    • You start pushing forward at P2. You start visibly moving forward at P3. Waiting until the top is way too late, yeah.
    • 100%. I've been guilty my entire time golfing of trying to fit everything imaginable into the .25 second downswing. Sometimes I think it's partly influenced by my backswing length and that if things were slightly longer on the way back, they'd be better synced up on the way down. I also kind of lack a transition. Was doing the practice swing drill today a decent bit where I was feeling like as the club got to the top, the feel of the weight was shifting me forward and initiating the fall into the lead leg. I loved this drill before for this reason and because I need to stop thinking of the golf swing as backswing and downswing.
    • The bold is very late.
    • Angle isn't perfect. Just found my TST alignment stick, so will make sure video angles are better in future videos. Focus right now is lower body and lower body only. If I make a single post here for the foreseeable future about anything NOT lower body focused, I need to be slapped (I will make an occasional note on unrelated stuff I might be seeing). It's not perfect by any means, but there is a decent bit I like about this swing. Lower body is definitely better than it was pre-TST meetup instruction. There are some things that are tough to see I think I'm doing better like where pressure is going into the trail foot and keeping that trail hip internally rotated. Need to keep feeling those. I think I do my best work when the trail leg keeps its flex on the backswing or at most loses a degree. Keeping the flex (but obviously not adding any) seems to help feel like I'm loading the right glute and to keep the hip internally rotated. Not totally sold on this though. I think my work on adding flow during the TST COVID-19 lessons really helped even though its been quite some time. Shift -> rotate -> shift -> rotate. I just need more out of my hips. It's not drastic, but it's everything. I think it will help sync up a lot regarding my swing and more power to boot. Unrelated note: I hate my negative spine angle.
