Love came to the defense of both players Wednesday on "Morning Drive," praising Mickelson's leadership last week at the Presidents Cup and confirming a report that Woods contacted him during the event about a potential assistant captaincy should he not make the Ryder Cup team next year.

"Tiger was really interested in the pairings and what was going on," Love said. "Because of what we did at the task force, because of him being on the Ryder Cup committee, because of him being such a great advisor to me since I was announced (as captain) back in March, he's like, 'What are you guys doing over there? Why are you putting this guy with that guy?'

I listened to both Chamblee and Love and they both have good points.  I will say I believe Davis Love wouldn't say crap if he had a mouth full of it and Brandel sometimes engages his mouth before he has his brain in gear.  So what Davis said was that as senior players on the team that both Phil and Tiger have been in leadership roles.  If true how has that worked out for us?  Not well if you like winning.  I do agree with Brandel about Tiger not showing any real passion for the Ryder Cup.  Tiger is maybe the best golfer to ever walk the fairways and yet his Ryder cup record sucks.  Something is wrong with that.  While Phil has show passion he has also been disruptive to the team at times by sharing his opinions, not always in concert with the Captain, publicly.  I believe it OK to share your discontent with the leadership with the Captain, but once the decision is made your choice is to march to the tune or leave the band, but not to take your concerns public while a part of the team.  So having made a short story long I voted neither and see I am in a distinct minority. But it is my opinion.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
