I have gone back to playing older clubs and I was wondering who does the same. I'm talking about clubs 20 years and older.

Currently I switch between sets of 1967 and 1987 Wilson Staff irons. I also play with a 1955 Macgregor M2 putter.

I played the same set of Wilson 1200 GE's dating back to about 1984 (They were originally my dad's) until about halfway through this season. They treated me well, but it was time for an upgrade.

I use my dad's old bubble shaft irons from about 15 years ago, in adition to the same putter as him (the Tuttle II, which I'm guessing was a very early mallet). When my dad bought these they were top of the line, they've been handed down to me, and whenever I (or whenever he did) break a wood or iron, he'd go online and buy a brand new club for 15 dollars.

My course is a 'modern' one at over 7000 yards. My older stuff works just fine.

While I initially was looking for new Irons this year ( as I seem to do every spring) I opted to keep the trusty Wilson Staff Blades I've had since the 80's. I'm investing $$ this off-season in lessons rather then clubs. Once I get the new swing down better, I'll concider some new technology.........
I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

I'm still using the custom-built clubs I had made in 1984, including persimmon woods (made of real wood), and cavity-back irons. Exceptions are a graphite (head) driver circa 1991, and a new two-ball style putter.

I'll have to agree with Zakko that I have a lot of trouble on modern courses. What with all the new technology the courses are using like high-resistance air and always-a-headwind fairways, selective gravity, and the intelligent rough that strongly attracts balls struck with old equipment. Just a matter of time until the better courses treat equipment more than 5 years old like they do steel spikes.

Fortunately, my home course is a muni, built in 1930. So far they've used their budget for old-fashioned course maintenance like watering, mowing, and taking really good care of the grounds.

A little late this year, but next season I'll have to find a modern course to try, and see just how bad my stuff is.

Got fitted on Friday for my modern sticks; pick them up tomorrow.

Wasn't going to play today because of the aforementioned reason, but a fellow board member talked me into playing today...so I went old school:

Driver: 975D 8.5*
Pittsburgh Persimmon 3-wood: 17* that Dad got me for my b-day c. 1981
1-iron: Tommy Armour w/S300
Irons (see avatar): Dynamic S 2-PW 1985 Wilson Staff Fluid Feel Forged blades (best clubs ever made)
Sand Wedge: TA 845
Putter: Acushnet Left Hand Flange #33A that my Dad bought me for my 8th(?) b-day?

My goal was to break 50 with that bag. Shot a 44. I had a blast!!!

I play my 1992 845s with no problems. I hit them well and have yet to find something that is that much better. I hit them as far, if not farther, then some of my friends who play "jacked up" lofts with their newer stuff. My best golfing buddy still plays 1970s vintage Wilson blades and plays to a 3. He may pull the trigger soon for a little more forgiveness. I have updated my woods as I have really seen the technology explode there.

Oh yeah, I forgot that I'm playing with a putter that is probably close to 20 years old. See my sig., it's a Titleist from before the Scotty Cameron days. I don't know exactly how old it is. When I was about 14 (1990) my buddy from down the street gave it to me - his dad was one of those guys with like 20 putters in the garage. It was at least a couple years old when I got it.

^ I saw a guy with a persimmion head 3wood hammer it down the middle about 225 yards. I've never used one.

I use my dads old spalding pro impact irons sometimes. They're from 91' and they work great. Nice ball flight, easy to hit, not overly long but not short.

I just retired my persimmon (real wood) 3-wood. 1984 model and it finally split from age (whimper). Anyhow, I still have the persimmon 5-wood from that set. Lovely club, hits about 190. I use it from the tees, fairway, rough, uphill, downhill, sidehill, doesn't matter. It will hit a nice fade on demand, my "go to" club. Would a steel club go further? I dunno, but would I want to try? Distance isn't everything.

    • 39, +4. A bit better hip slide stuff. More lateral, less turn with the hips.
    • Day 11: Worked on putting with the metronome
    • I added to total today by hopping it in on the first hole for an eagle. A short par 4, I hit 4 wood to 110. With a little breeze in my face I hit a 50 degree gap wedge to 2 feet and watched it hop into the hole for an eagle 2!
    • Sounds good. Text me if you have any questions. You have a good setup, too, and so long as you can get good camera angles… you should be good. https://skillest.com/@iacas
    • Day 14 (September 18).  Morning practice, despite questionable weather (it's raining).   Worked on chipping at first, including run-ups with UW and PW;  I've noticed lately some of my near-GIRs are missing forward, with nothing but grass ahead of me, but 20-30 yards to the pin.  After a few misadventures putting those lately, I wanted to at least get a feeling for what a 30-yard chip shot that doesn't have the variance of my quarter lob wedge would feel like.  I still think "putt when you can putt" is right, but... I am less sure I have a 30 yard putt in me.  Range time also, of course, same routine as the past week or so (drill, 3-4 slow shots, etc).   Did not get to the putting green as it was starting to come down a bit more. Darn, it really is raining.  And I thought today would be a perfect day to play, seeing as how it's 9-18 and all.
