In terms of skill level, it doesn't make a difference on my performance. But I tend to play better the less I chat and the less I goof around with my friends.

I tend to score better when I am by myself, actually.

It allows me to stay focused a little easier. Guess I just need to learn to carry that mental attitude to golfing with others.

yeah I am the same way. I was playing the DEN in Bloomington and there is a 500+ par 5 more like 600 but you get what I mean. I was shooting 5 over after 5 which for me is solid on this course especially. I tagged a drive about 290 hard fairways and elevated tee box with wind to our back. Im 270 or something like that out. I mean even on my best day I couldnt get there. O I forgot to mention he hit his drive 338 LMAO. Anyway he hits iron into the green goes off the back and I decided to show this punk up. I hit and monster slice 3 wood into the water.

I second that!

I play much better when I am alone. My concentration is at a much higher level and I can really focus on my game. If I am with others I am watching their game along with mine and tend to loose a little bit of focus. Also when I play with others I am always thinking of etiquette. When I play alone I hit the ball and move on and get into a nice groove not having to worry about anything, but my next shot.

I tend to play better with people that play ready golf and follow course ettiquette and rules. Playing with unduly slow people really throws off my concentration.

Me too. Doesn't matter if they are great or beginner. Slow play is hard to overcome.

I play once a week with a 3 handicapp golfer and he definitely make me a better player. I could never match him with stroke play so we play match play and leave the 18th hole for a double or nothing , who buys lunch scenerio.

His driver, irons, short game within 100 yards, around the green chipping and especially his putter is all rock solid.

I play better when people I am playing with are playing well in relation to their level. Better or worst than me, I suffer if they lose focus because are playing below their standard.

I play to improve and practice . When in the company of other players i see to it that i concentrate on my game and what plans i have per hole . From time to time i observe others get about their business specially in rough situations where in i accumulate the pros and cons of their golf shot. Having this in mind i picture what i would have done if it were me . that gives me the confidence when i get to be presented a similar situation as i have analized the problem in my mind befor . You get to learn from other players mistakes and use those lessons to improve your game .

do you tend to play better when you are playing with people who are about your skill level, above your skill level, or below your skill level?

At or above. What really makes me play better is either a tournament or a few bucks on the line. If the round has nothing riding on it, I tend to experiment a lot.

It does not matter. You still go through the same shot process.

Exactly. My pre-shot routine and mental process to execute each shot remains the same regardless of who I play with or the stakes, if any, I'm playing for.

For me, golf is a personal challenge. So, the "battle" is between me and the golf course. Although, I do have to admit it's fun trash talking with my buds. Especially, when we're all playing well. DT

    • Yea it doesn’t suck. I didn’t score well but most of it came down to short game and putting. I had 3 holes I can directly blame bad long game shots on. I’m just trying to hedge my bets. If I don’t make it as a professional golfer, I could be a fitness model as a backup plan.

    • Good episode on Skill versus Technique. I agree with definitions. It makes sense in my head that skill is part learned and part just genetics. Technique is mostly learned but also can be limited by your own skill in how well you develop motor patterns, which is a skill.  They are intertwined together to a point, but definitely not the same.
