So, I have a question. As I stated earlier, on a packed course, even if every group is waiting, invariably every group will at some point fall behind a bit on 1 or 2 or maybe even (gasp!) 3 holes due to errant shots during the round (unless it's a 4some of + cappers). Even though this gap will be closed on the next or maybe the following hole, should the group responsible for the errant shots let the group behind play through as soon as trouble is encountered?

On a packed day, everyone needs to understand that play will be a bit slower and will need some patience. Unfortunately, not everyone observes common courtesies and speedy play. If the group with errant shots has a gap ahead and they are holding up the group behind, then common courtesy would be to allow groups to play through... And maybe the one behind them on the next few holes. I am always looking over my shoulder and painfully aware of oncoming groups, which are onesome and twosomes in a cart (I walk). I always let them play through as I don't like to be pushed.

My take is if every group is waiting then the tee times are close together and even with searching for multiple lost balls on one hole you really shouldn't fall that far behind. If you get to the next tee box and the group in front of you is coming off or already off the green then you need to motivate your group to catch up. If that happens a third time then I would say it's a group problem rather than an errant shot problem.

For busy times I try to avoid courses that only have 8 minutes (or less) between tee times. 9 minutes is OK and 10 is wonderful IMO.
