I started doing something different in my chipping practice. I use two strings about 8" a part, parallel with each others. Usually about 20' long to accomodate more than on club. The idea is to consistently land the ball inside that 8" area between the strings. I figure when I can consistently land the ball inside that 8" area, I will move the strings closer together. I hope to get down to using just one string.

I also tried this yesterday with some shorter pitch shots. My pitching accuracy was not as good as I thought.

As for landing area target,  I purchased some dish rags from the dollar store to lay down on my practice surface.

Sounds like a little bit of setup, but the most important thing with chipping is to be able to hit the ball to a desired spot.  That's all I try to do.  When I practice, I walk off the distance to the hole and chip 1/3 of the way (+/- for speed, uphill, downhill).  If there's not a good spot on the green, I may put a leaf or tee in the ground.  I'm lazier than you. :-)

I've found the biggest thing for me is to not pinch the chip off the turf.  Too unpredictable.  I put the ball in the middle of my stance and pick it off the turf.  Creates  less spin (actually kind of dead) and I can control the distance with the speed of the club and not accidently get too much into the shot when I pinch it.  I use no or very little wrists.  Works for me.

I've said before, I chip better than I putt.

I use the Jim Furyk method for chipping as shown below and find it to be very accurate

You are not lazier than me. You just have your own way of doing it. Nothing wrong with that at all. A positive end justifies the means.

I should say that I don't do the string thing at the practice range. It's set up in an open area where I live. It stays there ready to use at a moments notice.

I use this method too. I am just a little more Runyon, than Furyk with it.

I don't care for this type of chip.  I believe a chip should get on the putting surface if at all possible.  With this type of chip, it wouldn't travel very far in the air before rolling.  This wouldn't work very well in gnarly rough either.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
