Basically I only have a pitching wedge, gap wedge, and a super old 56 degree vokey that is now banned for high school tournaments and need a new wedge set

I don't have money to get fitted for wedges but I think I have enough to buy some decent ones/used ones and we have a nice 2 week break after next Monday

Currently hit my pitching wedge 140-150, gap wedge 130 ish, and my 56 I use for anything under 125

Basically I kind of want to replace my taylormade rsi2 gap wedge and my 56 degree for a real full set of 3 wedges but I am not sure which/what degrees

Find out the loft of your pitching wedge and increase by 4° increments. EX: 48° PW: 52° GW: 56° SW: 60° LW: Thats the way most do it.

My grandpa uses a 48, 51, 54, 57 wedge set. it's all how you want it.

Not sure where in Texas you live, but your zone has lots of golf activity. You might look at some golf expos or demo days and try out the wedges there. You have the new club hitting lines, and then you have the "garage sale" area where models from a couple of years back show up, some used, some still new.

Also, fittings often are free if you buy a new club (not necessarily 2016, just not used before). Cleveland offers a Wedge Analyzer fitting system. Both Cleveland and Vokey are discounting last year's models now, some wedges coming in at under $100. If you buy three RTX 2.0 Cleveland wedges, you get $99 off total MSRP; look for Wedge-A-Thon promo. If you're playing HS golf, will you save that much by getting two used wedges? I'd advise getting fitted: these are your close-in scoring clubs.

And, others clubmakers are offering discounts too.

As far as wedge mix goes, we would need to know a little about your short game, what type of shots you like to hit. If you have a pro who gives you lessons, he or she might have ideas on wedge mix.

I would keep the gap wedge and add a 52/58 wedge pair -- both with 10-12 degrees of bounce (two sand wedges).  I think most amateurs should avoid anything more lofted than a 58, and for me a 52 is usually the perfect loft for most greenside chipping.  You will still have a decent gap to the 52 as your next scoring club on a full shot, but the main reason is that you can master a set of 2 wedges more quickly than a set of 3.

Not just amateurs. A Golf Digest item from a couple years ago said that half the PGA tour pros carry a 58* as their highest lofted wedge.

Since when do they consider HS golf "Elite Amateur Competition"? As@WUTiger put it, Cleveland has a wedge analyzer and the SM5 wedges are down in price as well. I would go 50°, 54°, 58° personally... You really want to grind their gears, show up with a set of Ping Eye 2+ wedges. The TOUR banned them, but the USGA cannot. Nor can any level of amateur competition...

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
