Hi all!

I wanted to know, how do you guys spread out your lofts, and therefore, your distances? I have the following breakdown:

LW - 60

SW - 55

PW - 50

9i - 46

8i - 42

7i - 38

6i - 34

5i - 30

4i - 26

3i - 22

2i/5wood - 18

3wood - 15

1wood - 9.5


Does anybody know Tiger's specs? I know he has slightly old fashioned, and considered by today's standards, weak lofts. My specs are from the mid 80s...I was just curious how you all did it and if anyone knows, how the best player in the world does it. Thanks very much!

The set of irons I own are:
4I: 24 5: 27 6: 30
7: 34 8: 38 9: 42 P: 46

I also own a 3I, different set, unsure of loft. I should look it up before using it.

My hybrids are 23 (4) and 20 (3).

My 3-Wood is 15.5, driver is 10.5

I own wedges in 50 (GW from some Cobra set, I forget which), 52 (Vokey), 55 (SW, came with my set. Not good out of any type of sand, best I can tell, so I don't use it), 56 (Vokey), 58 (Vokey). I typically use one of the gap wedges and either the 56 or 58, depending on the sand at that course.

Ah yes, I see here that my 9 iron has your wedge loft. It's interesting that you have this set up. I wonder how you make up the wedge loft difference ? Assuming you have a 60 degree LW and something like a 55-56 degree SW....you must carry a 50 degree or so GW or else there's a 10 degree gap. But then what club do you take out to throw in that extra wedge you need? Interesting stuff to think about!

tembolo381 is a 0.8 hdcp and his comparing his specs to a 24 hdcper? Are you sure shindig needs a 4th wedge? He already has the pitching wedge (46), and a choice of lofts for gap and lob/sand wedge. Based on his count, that's 14 clubs, including 3 wedges. And high handicappers don't need a 4th wedge as badly as low handicappers. I can screw up as badly with a sand wedge as I can with a lob wedge

You have slightly strong lofts. Do you see a big gap between your 3i and 2i? 17 degrees...you are almost hitting a 1 iron hybrid there! how is your short game distance control? You have pretty big gaps there....6 and 7 degrees. Thanks for the input!

I'm guessing this question was for me? My irons are pretty close to standard but gapped accordingly throughout my bag.

Yes, question was for you. What do you mean by standard? You mean the way they are made available off the shelf? How are they gapped accordingly?

Yeah, I noticed the opposite when you posted this. If I were to design a set from scratch, I'd probably want my PW to be 50 degrees or so, although really, I don't care about what the X degree element is called.

I generally don't carry too many long clubs. I have a driver, a 3-wood, and either 2 hybrids or a hybrid and a 3-Iron. I rarely hit the longer clubs, except for tee shots. I'll typically hit a hybrid for my second shot on a par-5. Other than that, I will just divide the distance. I don't go for the green from beyond 200 yards, unless it's a tee shot to a long par-3. If I'm 250 or so out, I'll hit hybrid-wedge or iron-wedge. Even if I hit my 3-Wood perfect at that distance, I'd just have a half wedge left. As long as it's going to take two shots to get there, I might as well make it two shots I can do easily. As for wedges, I do space them roughly evenly, either 46-50-56 or 46-52-56 or 46-52-58, depending on the course. If I were playing a very short course with small greens, I might go 46-50-52-56, or if I buy a 54 someday, 46-50-54-58.

I used to joke about a terrible slice with my putter! I haven't quite found the right mix yet, but I'm sure a 4th wedge isn't on the horizon for a while. What I really need is a driver I love (check), a medium-to-long club that I can hit well consistently (4H, check), some good chipping clubs (it's tough to chip with Super-Game Improvement irons, so I'm using wedges. I know, I know!), and a good putter (check). Then it's just a matter of filling in the rest from shorter clubs for the most part. I'd rather have a large net from which I can hit the green than a variety of long-game clubs, at least at this point.

that's a nice spacing there! If you drop your GW - 50 though, you'll have a 9 degree gap between your pw and sw wouldn't you????? You had your PW weakened you say? So it used to be like 44 degrees or so? You have strong lofts on your irons! So I see while you keep the GW in...you sacrifice by leaving a fairly big gap between your 3 iron and your 3 wood (a distance that might not come up very often on the course). Just out of curiosity, what is this distance....about 210-250 yards? Somewhere in that range? Pretty smart spacing i'd say!

I did a check up on my own clubs recently, from wedges up there's a 4 degree gap between clubs.

I carry my 3H about 185 and my 3W 205, and my 1W 220. My total distance from the tee is about 190 for the 3H, 215 3W and 235-240 for the 1W. I know this is not long but believe it or not I am about 10 yards longer on the 3H and 3W and 15 on the 1W than I was a couple years ago, since I am in my 50s I consider that a big gain. I might hit the wedges a bit farther than I stated, but I try not to think that way because every time I lean on a wedge my accuracy sucks.
