Just wondering on the average, during your actual games how many of the clubs in your bags actually get used? Here's mine:

Driver
19* hybrid
25* hybrid
7 iron
9 iron
Pitching Wedge
Lob Wedge
Putter

8 of 14. Of course the others alternate but these are the ones most used in my games.

If someone else has already started a thread on this, my apologies- wasnt able to back read.

The best way to find this out would be to recall every shot you made that day, do it for five or so rounds. But my guess is, in the space of a round:

Driver: 13-14 times. Even if I can't reach it in one or a par five in two, I'd rather shorten the hole as much as possible. 3 wood: 3-7 times. Depends how good my shot off the tee is. 3 iron: More than I'd like. Probably five times a round for punching out of the trees. 4, 5 iron - rarely. Sometimes not at all. 6 iron - 2 or 3 times. I'm usually either a mid or short iron into most par four's. 7 iron - 3 to 5 times. 8, 9 irons - 2-3 times each. PW: 15 times. I use it for a lot of my chipping when I don't need to fire straight at a target and bite immediately. GW: Rarely. It's a pain in the butt. Really. SW: 10 times. Shorter chips, if I've shortsided myself, or even, yeah, sand. LW: Depends. Anywhere from not at all to ten times a round depending how everything else works and how fast the greens are. But I'm more afraid of blading the ball 40 yards off the other side, so confidence is a bit of an issue.

I did that a while back, and I'm going to do it again this Xmas season. It caused me to realize that I don't hit my 4-Iron at my home course. In a typical round, I hit: - Driver - 3-Wood if there are long par-3s or if I'm hitting driver poorly. But I hit this rarely. - 3- and 4- Hybrids for layups on par-5s, sometimes second shot on long par-4s. - Irons 5 6 8 9 for various approaches. No par-4s at my home course have a 7-iron after a typical drive, but I wouldn't remove that club from my bag. - GW, SW / LW. - Putter The PW and 7-Iron are in there because I hit the clubs around them so often and I don't want to have to emulate those clubs on demand, especially since I only carry 13.

Driver - 8-12 times per round depending on course and tee positions.
3 Wood - 3-6 times per round depending on tee positions and quality of lie for 2nd shot on Par 5's.
5 wood - 2-3 times per round. Normally 190 - 200m par 3's
3 Iron - depends on par3 length or I use to punch out of trees
4 Iron - Rarely - possibly on Par3's depending on length
5 Iron - Rarely for full shots into green but often to lay up on Par5's
6 Iron - 3-4 times per rounds into above average length par 4's
7 Iron - 2-3
8- Iron - 3-4 approach shots
9 - Iron - Rarely seem to have the required distance
W - 10-14 - Use a lot around greens and from 110m -70m in
54 - unfortunately normally see a bit of sand and also from 70m to 20m in
60 - As little as possible unless I badly short-side myself as when I overuse it I get very bad results
Putter - More times than I would like to mention

I use:

Driver off about 10/11 driving tees.
Fairway wood: 2nd shot on 2/3 par 5's, and my 470 yard par 4 (beast)
Hybrid: Once a round if lucky
Irons: Spread out evenly, but more long irons than mid and short as all my par 3's are over 160 yards.
Wedges: Pitching for small chips, sand and lob for anything else
Putter: Unfortunately, about 32 times a round...

I use all of them.

Driver-10 Times a round
2 Iron-On all long par 3s and short par 4s. That would be 4 to 5 times a round.
3 Iron-I use this iron, A LOT. In trouble, for chipping, (because I suck at chipping with my LW) and as my second shot on long par 5s.
4 Iron-I absolutely love my 4I. I use this on long par 4s and when in deep rough from 145-170 yards.
5 Iron-Any time I am away from 180-185 yards.
6 Iron-Another club, depending on the course, that I would tee off with on short par 4s.
7 Iron and 8 Iron-Use both from 150-165 yards depending on lie, uphill/downhill and condition of the course.
9 Iron and PW-Both from 100-145 yards. I also use them to chip when I'm going uphill.
LW-I use this club, knowing full well I'm going to shank it. This club should not be in my bag.
SW-Use it only when I'm in the sand. That's twice a round.
Putter-No explanation needed.

Not a bad question. I use the following:

Driver 3 wood 18 degree hybrid 20 degree hybrid 23 degree hybrid 26 degree hybrid 8 iron 9iron PW GW SW Putter So, 12 clubs. Of course, this represents what I use for my home course. Of course, this is subject to change ( as is the temp., the wind, the season, etc., all affecting club selection - this is not a simple game ). But, nonetheless, a good question.

Driver - Off the tee, any long par 4/5 that preferably doglegs right.
3 Wood - Off the tee to any tight fairways, 2nd shot off long par 5's.
2 Hybrid - 2nd shot after a 3 wood.
4 Hybrid - Anything within the 200 yard sticks.
5 - Rarely. Mostly for punch shots out of the trees. ...yay...

7 - Often. 160
8 - Often. 150

I really can't tell, because one day my iron 8 is the go-to-club and on the other day I don't hit even one shot with it.

But in general I would say that I use every club in my bag and I would not take one out to make the bag lighter to carry...

In order from most to least:
Putter
4 hybrid
PW
7 iron
9 iron
Driver
SW
8 iron

I never use my 5 or 6 irons. The 6 because the grip is in terrible need of replacement, and the 5 because it's a mismatched club that came with my set that I hate, and theres only a 15 yard difference between my 4 and 7 right now so I can get by. Also, I really need to fill out my set.

My home course is pretty long (the longest in the Southern Hemisphere) so all the long irons and mid irons get a workout. I hardly ever go for my 3 wood. It never agrees with me.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
