After thinking about my broken 3 wood, I have been thinking hard about not even getting another one. I really love my hybrid and think I should add another. I'll list my clubs below and see what you guys think. I may be crazy but I only hit it once or twice a round since I hit the ball a long way. The distances are carry distances, and yes these are true. I am a collegiate 20 year old golfer and I have trackman proof.

Driver - Taylormade R1 10.5 degree - X flex (will probably replace sometime this summer) - 275

Hybrid - Exotics XCG 18 degree - X flex 245

4I - TMB 716 23 degree- X100 shaft 215

My question is, should I get a hybrid in between my driver and Exotic, or my 4I and Exotic. I am looking for something a bit longer than the 18 degree so I can hit it on the tee like I did with my 3 wood and to reach long par 5s, but conversely I don't like to hit the hybrid shorter than full, feels weird. Any suggestions?

In my bag:

Taylormade R11S Driver
Taylormade RBZ 3-wood
Nike VRS Irons 4-9
SM4 Titleist Vokey Wedges 47, 54, 58
College freshman playing golf at Wabash College in Indiana!

These aren't crazy carry distances, so I believe you haha...What was the carry distance with your 3-wood?  It would all depend on if your playing longer courses or shorter ones, I would try to think about the 2nd shot distances I have on par 5s.  If its longer than a 245 carry then I would want a 3-wood back in the bag.  If you think you can hit most of them with the Hybrid, then I would close that 30 yard gap between the Hybrid and 4i.  I carry a 3w and then a hybrid.  Im not sure I wouldn't be able to carry a 3w as it is used many times off the tee as well..

Most of the courses I play are 68-7200. I only need to hit a 3wood for my second shot on par 5s maybe once or so in a round. But usually I don't just because I'm not as good with it. I'm leaning toward a hybrid. Is there anyway to bend a hybrid? That's what I'm thinking of doing if possible.

I recently got a Callaway XR 4w and found that pretty easy to hit compared to the previous 3w I used.  Maybe that would fill in the Driver - Hybrid gap.  I have (when I hit it well) Driver 240, 4w 215, 3 hybrid 200, 4 hybrid 190.

How many clubs are you currently using?

I have 13 clubs without the 3wood. D Hy 4-9 48 52 56 60 putter. You can bend a hybrid can't you? Thinking of bending it to a 16 degree and getting a 20 degree hybrid.

I can't help you with your bending a club question.  I have no experience with that.

Anyone else?

I just text my boss about it (asst. pro, I'm a bag boy). I do like the idea of a 4w a lot. They are smaller than a 3w correct? Also have thought about a mini driver.

    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
