Solid Iron Set

So I just started golfing this year with a collection of clubs I have inherited from different people.  I have been browsing around the forums and was getting overwhelmed with all the different places and suggestions. I am currently using irons that are from probably the 50s/60s so I think those are definitely something that needs to be replaced haha. I have a budget of 250-450 or so and was wondering what people are using or have used in that range that they like. Since I am new to golf I am definitely open to something more forgiving but don't want something that would be considered "beginners" that I will grow out of quickly.

You might find a good golf shop and tell them you're interested in used irons. A good shop will let you hit some models, and help you find a set that fits your swing.

@onthehunt526, can you help on this? I know you're across the state from Albany, but any ideas?

Not necessarily across... But I'm a good three hours away.... @RFKFREAK and @colin007 can probably help better than I can... But in the $250-$450 range there is a few models I know of you can get used... Several in fact. 

From what I've seen within the local area... 

Titleist AP1, Mizuno MX series, Cobra Baffler, Ping G20, and my set last year Exotics CU... (I already sold my E8's otherwise I would sell them to you @BeefStu)... I would stay away from Box Sets... They are horrible... Adams Idea hybrid irons are good, too... EBay is not the worst place to buy clubs from... I have seen some obvious counterfeit clubs on the Ebay and you cannot hit them before you buy them... 

You can however go to Golf Galaxy, Dick's or something to that effect and test out clubs. If there is a fitter nearby (Colin or Christian could probably help you with that) sometimes you can get a previous model for an absolute steal... I spent like $199 on my CU's brand new. (I play EXi irons now)... 

People knock me for being a Tour Edge "staff player" because every single club in my bag is Exotics... But Tour Edge has the Hot Launch line where you can pick-up a set of irons (4-AW) for $399.99... Hell if you decided you wanted hybrids RBG is selling a blended set for $200.00... 

My advice is yes, get a set with forgiveness you will need it.... But don't break the bank when you are just starting out.

I currently shoot a set of cobra baffler they are nice clubs think I spent 400 that was 4-6h 7-G not many will believe me but I was playing today and found out I broke my driver at the 5th hole And I don't have a 3w that is worth shooting. So I grabbed my 4h managed to bomb a few 240y shots off the tee box with out a tee.     Very forgiving but you can still feel a good shot and a bad one.  Would reccomend them to anyone for a good starter set

Hey @BeefStu, here in Albany there's a bunch of places, I believe the local Golf Galaxy on Washington Ave Extension has used clubs, definitely used drivers and woods. They're very cool with anyone trying out clubs on their simulator. I'm just not positive about them having used iron sets, which is the direction I'd go in for a set of quality clubs that have been gently used.

@colin007 where do you like to golf around here? My buddy and I have hit a few par 3s and then Western Turnpike and was looking for something different but not crazy expensive (although nothing is too bad in this area). Feel like everything is higher than others or really crowded. Wasnt sure if you had a spot or hidden gem you liked to go too.

For par 3 courses, which are great if you're just getting into the game, there's Hiawatha Trails, Mill Road, Hidden Meadows, and then Colonial Acres in Glenmont which is my favorite and where I learned how to hit the ball.
