Hi I'm 15 and I love golf, very much. Right now I'm just a 8.x handicaper but I'm getting better and better each year, wich is normal at my age. But I would like to go in USA ( I'm canadian ) for university. I would like to have a student's grant ( or subvention) ( I'm not sure of the definition of that word ) (anyways ) because University in USA is very expensive but we can play golf all year long. But the thing is that I don't know what it takes to go out there and have a place. I was wondering if one of you already had a subvention to play golf and how good are the kids in USA. With my teacher, we think that I can reach the positive handicap for summer 2009. Will it be enough?

Thanks, cheers,
-Julien

Yeah it breaks down schools and has some good advice on how to approach schools about their golf programs.

I would say that a positive index will get you a try out, the next thing is to preform. Do you play a lot of competitive golf (ie. tourneys)?

Depending on your parents' money, if you can't play at a 4-year university, you might be able to play at a 2-year college and work your way to a 4-year, both academically and athletically. As for specifics, I don't know, but I seem to think someone on the PGA Tour - Bubba Watson maybe? - did something like this.

With a positive handicap and some exposure in amateur tournaments, I'd be surprised if you aren't at least on a good division 2 team, maybe division 1. I really don't know.

Since you're out of state(really country), I'd say for tuition alone the cheapest you're getting would be around 8-10k (and that's really inexpensive). Along with a dorm or house, double that, and then books, you're looking at about just over 20k a year for a university (once again at the least expensive). I'm pretty sure you'd be looking at easily over 30-40 for the most part.

Wow! Tuition fees here are £3070 (stg). Then you've got your accomodation to pay on top of that. If your accomodation is in halls of residence then its almost the same as the tuition fees. but Get a house rented with a few mates and its cheaper.

I guess were not so bad off after all. But bring back the old days and abolish tuition fees, I say!

EDIT; Are those tuitions you quoted per year, or for the whole course?

Unfortunately, I start paying for golf Digest magazines only on November, so I got the Decembre edition. Is there a link that I can go to see the infos you were talking about? Heum, my parents' money he? Well, actually it's not a problem but even if you're rich, it's always the same price to go to university, and that price is not given. ( I mean expensive) Moreover, is there good university with golf school (+subvention) in every states, well, the south states? I was wondering going to Florida with my sister.

Oh yeah, do someone know what is the handicap of THE tiger?

Cheers, Julien

There are plenty of good schools with good golf programs in the southern states. But be aware - that term may mean something different here. Geographically, California is a southern state, but no one in the USA would call it that. Are you aware of the distinction between Division I, II, and III schools? Tiger's handicap... there is an excellent article on that sort of thing here: http://thesandtrap.com/columns/the_n...es_of_the_pros . The short story has two components: * Tiger is very very good at golf. * Tiger doesn't regularly play courses with rating and slope, and thus it is tough to give an accurate assessment of his handicap.

Well, no I don't have any idea of the I, II or even III division. You would be nice to explain it ! And about tiger's handicap, thanks a lot, now I understand why he's a phenomenom! Well, like if I never knew why

Thanks again, Julien

Essentially, the division is stating how much the university is willing to spend on their sports program. The lower the division number, the more they're willing to spend. Correspondingly, this also determines how many scholarships are available to the sport, and so on. Typically, their teams engage in higher levels of competition and are able to grab the better players, because said players can be given a scholarship to allow them to focus on their sport more. This becomes more relevant in team sports, because Division I football or basketball players get more exposure than Division III, and are thus more likely to be noticed in their respective sports' professional drafts.

That's nice, so if I understand well, if I can get to a division I golf program, it's great, and it means that I'm in the good ones? Is that it?

Division I golf is (I believe) the best of the college golf. Now, that's not to say you can't have a great college career playing for Div 2 or 3, but Division I is going to put you in the most competitive arena. Now, that assumes you play for the team... I don't know enough to tell you if being on a Div I team but not playing in tournaments is better or worse than being the captain of a Div II team.

Hello Julian,

I am also 15 and love golf, I am looking to play college. As mentioned before about the article in Golf Digest, it is a great thing to read if you can find it. My 3 local pro's all played college golf, 2 for Arizona State, and one for Oregon, but they all told me what to do in steps, and here they are: 1) Find about 5+ colleges that you would like to go to. 2) Since they cannot legally initiate contact with you until your junior year you need to either get a phone number to talk to them or and email address 3) Talk to the coach, let them know how old you are, your handicap, and that you are interested in playing college golf for their school 4) Keep them up to date on your golf (eg. tournament places, major handicap change, etc.) 5) Don't be afraid to talk to Division II or even Division III schools, if they offer you a spot then that takes the stress off of finding a school and then if you get a Division I offer then take it 6) Towards you junior and senior year take scheduled and unscheduled visit to colleges giving you offers and see which one you like the most 7) Don't just look at the golf programs, but also the academics because that is important to 8) Finally don't have you mind set on one school be open to all schools Hope this helps and good luck on your journey

I'll gladly let you know how it goes, but it's not for the next year... Here in canada, our education system is not the same as yours. In order, here it is:

-We start with primary school ( 6 years )
-Then it's high school ( 5 years) (actually, I'm in my fourth year)
-Then it's '' cegep '' That's how it is name here) ( it's about 2-3-4 years dependent on what you're studying)
-Then after that it's University

So I'will probably do a 2 years cegep and, if I want to go to USA, I will probably take a one year-off to work and make some cash, wich let me 4 or five years.

907golfer12 : Did you start do talk with College teachers and programs ?

If yes what did they told you?

I have a son that is 17, and a junior in high school. OK, first off what I did to learn more about the colleges scholarships what have you is I called the athletics department at three colleges. Two being division 11 schools one being division one. Here is what I was told by all three colleges...... 1. GPA 2. A well rounded student that also has other interest/sports besides golf. 3. Junior tours, like AJGA, and how they perform under pressure. 4. An updated resume, with video, and faxing or emailing the coaches with new tourney results and so forth. I'm not sure how this will cross over as that you live in Canada. I'd have one your parents call some colleges here in the states. Maybe they can offer some information/help. Oh and go to Golf Digest and do a search on colleges. A ton of information on how to get started. Remember you're still young so you do have time. I wish you luck!!!!

~disclaimer~ I'm just a golf mom.
