So I just received foot powder spray in the mail today after reading LSW a while back for ball contact awareness on the clubface. Everyone mentions sweet spot in terms of horizontal CoG but no one ever mentions it in terms of vertical CoG, i.e. which groove on the clubface should the center of the ball be hit on. For irons, is it the second/third/fourth/fifth groove? What about wedges that have a lot more grooves than irons, will it be the same groove as it is for the irons?

It's a good question. Does this help?

His irons were probably different than current blades, but Hogan said when he was trying to hit a 'quail high' extra low shot in the Texas wind that he would try to hit it on the 2nd groove. I assume this was slightly lower than the 'sweet spot' so there would be vertical gear effect to deloft the club further. That would imply a vertical sweet spot of 3rd or 4th groove for his clubs, which seems to correspond to Tiger's wedge pretty well.
