I was wondering how your handicap and net score are figured out?  I'm just getting back into golf after many years of not playing, never worried about a handicap before but I am now keeping track so I can use it help judge my progress. I use swing by swing to track my rounds and noticed today it showed my normal score and also my adjusted net score. What is the point to this? I still shot what I did, not the adjusted score. I guess I don't understand the point in this

Did it also show an adjusted gross score? In the USGA system, the max score you can use for handicap purposes is limited ( this is called Equitable Stroke Control).  Maybe you shot 105 with a 10 on one hole. If your handicap is in the 20's, your ESC max is 8, so your adjusted gross is 103. Subtract you handicap, and you get an adjusted net. Perhaps others who use stroke by stroke can help more, but that's my first guess

Ok, that makes a little more sense I think. I don't recall seeing a adjusted gross, maybe I don't know where to look in the app.

i use swing by swing to track handicap as well.  It uses the same rules as the USGA system.  So as DaveP said, it will cap your scores on holes if you have a couple terrible ones. This is your adjusted gross score. It shows you that when you click on the Handicap link on your profile.  (I think you mistakenly referred to it as your adjusted net.) It does this so that golfers cant just use one or two bad holes a round to mask their true talents by calling themselves a 14 handicap when they are more like a 10.  The adjusted gross score is what is actually used in the calculation for your index

Just a couple notes that confused me a little bit when I started to use Swing by Swing to calculate mine.... First, what it actually calculates in your Index, even though it refers to it as your handicap.  Use this index to calculate your handicap for each course you play.  Its also important to make sure you enter your handicap for each score card you enter.  If you dont, it will think you have a zero handicap and will calculate an index for you that is completely incorrect,  i learned that one myself the hard way.

    • Day 45 (27 Dec 25) - played at one of the sisters courses to my home course.  Solid session through the bag….of the 7 pars, 4 were up and down 1 putts (wedges were dialed in) from 6’ or less.  Off the tee - solid, irons were consistent even it a bit under on distances.  Course management was on - stayed the course even with a few offline recovery shots required…
    • Day 453 - 2025-12-27 Two things today for about 48 balls (I like to hit three or six balls at a time before taking a small break to pick them up): Right leg stays flexed a bit, internal rotation on the backswing. Kept my eyes looking at the ball and trusted that the backswing was fine.
    • Day 137 12-27 Worked on wider backswing today and tried to remain flowy. Recorded face on and down the line. Swing is looking better but I mentally felt off today, just frustrated. Tomorrow's a new day!
    • Day 8 - 2025-12-27 45 minutes of short game work at local muni, mostly putting work. Trying to get lots of reps in with consistent quality tempo.
    • I guess I'll stay at -16 for this year's challenge.  I never birdied holes 7, 13 (the 2 hardest holes) in 2025.  Also had a couple Eagle putts on the par 5's, but didn't convert either time.  Looking forward to 2026, though!
