It's the reason they have to hit the mulligan that creates the slow down, multiple bad shots and the subsequent searching. I see it all the time and it makes me nuts.

I use to play a mulli before I started on my breaking 90 quest.  We would do one on a side and I would only use it if I was OB.  A lot of times I didn't even use it.  I haven't use one this year as I am counting everything and playing by the rules.

If you want to use one or two, no prob its your call and remember that you used them if you are gonna brag about your score.  Like a couple weeks ago on one of my 88s my buddy took one on the front 9 for a dub and two on the back for shots in the water and at the 19th he was like "hey I was close to your 88 with my 93!"  I said what?  You were more like 97.  Don't forget the 2 mulligans you used for the pond shots.  He had a confused look for a bit but I think he figured it out.

Another time we were behind a 3 some and they were hitting two balls a lot on every hole.  We were talking to them on the 18th Tee and asked how they were shooting and they were like Good rounds 82, 85 and 87.  My friend and I asked if they were counting all their shots and they had a stunned look as we asked about all the seconds shots.  Each guy playing best ball out of two shots?  They got real defensive and we got louder and they finally hit and only played one ball on the last hole.  Should have spoke up earlier as it was a slow round due to them,

Hey,  you are only cheating yourself playing like that.  To each his own... I play by the rules!

Mulligan first tee only, and only if nobody is behind me. If my first tee shot is acceptable, I do not take the mulligan. Most of the time I don't need it. As I'm getting better at golf even my ugly shots land in play.

What drives me crazy is people doing all kinds of shots over, playing multiple balls on every hole. Multiple drivers, chips, putts. Now that I have this Bushnell I can see them doing it in 6x magnification.

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
