Getting back into the game after 15 years off.  Been playing with Ping Eye 2 +.  Was looking to update and
was going to get the Ping G30's.  PGA Superstore recommended the Taylormade M2's, as they had a pre-owned set that
was an inch and a half longer than standard.  I'm 6'2 and he said that was what I needed.  No doubt, they are long, but I can't hit em.  I can't get any sense of
feel from them.  Went back and the manager at the Superstore was more than thorough in trying to help me.  Gave me a proper fitting and recommended shortening
them 3/4 of an inch (so total extension is 3/4).  He said to try them for a few days and if they still didn't work, they would give me full credit and would go with
the Ping's.  Still not hitting them well.  Also, in the hitting areas at the Superstore, I don't hit the G30's so well either.  I have a Ping G30 3 hybrid and I hit it like
I've never hit any club.  Need some help before I spend another wad of cash!

Welcome to the site.

What shafts were on the M2's.  What do you mean by can't get a "sense of feel"?  Did that mean you can't feel where the club head is or something else?

Have them check the swing weight, when you lengthen or shorten a club you typically need to adjust the weight of the head too or you change the swing weight that the clubs were designed to play at.

Given they were used clubs, the store likely doesn't know if the shafts were installed by the manufacturer so they'd have to run the serial number through TM to find out if they were and if swing weights were adjusted.

While height is a factor, the distance of your wrist to the ground should be how they determined the club lengths.  I'm 6' 1" and play with standard length to +1/2" clubs, so 1.5" was definitely too long for you unless you have very short arms.

Thank you for the reply,

The shafts are steel, regular flex.

I can't get any sense of a sweet spot.  I never feel confident over the ball.  The feeling at impact is alien to me.  I'm new to game improvement irons and wonder if this is something I have to get used to.

The second time they worked with me, the manager did a great job.  He did find that the heads were upright, as well.  He didn't say how much.  He measured my lie strikes and I was almost always on the heel.  He cut the clubs 3/4, but I'm still hitting on the heel.

Really not sure about the weight.  To me, they feel heavy.  It feels very different than any iron I've ever hit.

I will go back this week and perhaps go with a new set of Ping G30's instead of pre-owned clubs.

I know I'm very steep in my downswing and trying to work through that, so it's difficult for me to get a good strike on any iron consistently, right now.

It'seems probably your swing and you are hitting too far off-center. GI clubs make the sweetspot seem bigger so you feel like you made centered contact even if you miss by a bit. People have issues with them not giving enough feedback because they make it hard to tell if you miss towards the heel or toe. Everything in the general vicinity of center feels like sweetspot contact.

I think you should just play with whatever irons you have on hand for a while until you get back into the swing of things, then worry about getting fit.

It would help if you specified the exact shafts.  Some shafts are heavier than others and if the swing weight is off, you could lose a sense of where the club head is at.

The M2's (unless you have the Tour version) are cast SGI irons, they are meant for individuals who want to maximize distance and trajectory even when not hitting the sweet spot.  I makes sense that shortening the clubs made the lie angle incorrect for you.  If the lie angle isn't right, and you're hitting heel first it likely means you're hitting the ball off the bottom of the club head which is not where the sweet spot on those irons is and explains why you don't have a feel for it.  I tested the M2's for a while at a Demo Day and while I didn't care for the look of them, I hit the ball very well with them.  I'd say they were on average a club longer than my own clubs and even the 5i launched the ball with a high trajectory.

I'd suggest you make sure the are fitted for you properly first and if you still don't like them, then go with the G30's but again make sure they are fit for you so that the shaft length and lie angle are right for your swing.

Be sure to compare both the G30 and G irons before deciding. Longer, straighter and higher were the results for me on the G-series compared to the G30 irons.  The G irons are still working quite well during on-course play.  Still hitting them high, straight and close to the hole.

Yeah try the G irons, they have a more compact look than the G30's and might fit your eye better since you're used to the Eye 2's. Or even try the i irons.

Thanks for all the info and input.  Played with the M2's again, today, and just plain don't like them.  Going in for the G's or the G30's.  Think I'm done with going with pre-owned irons.  Gonna make sure to get fit right and get a new set.  Glad to be on the forum, here!!  Thanks, again.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
