My wife and I are considering moving to southern Oregon from northern California sometime in the next few months. We've pretty much narrowed our search for a new home to the Medford/Grants Pass/Roseburg areas, although we haven't ruled out Coos Bay/Bandon/Brookings areas on the coast. If you're familiar with this part of Oregon, can you offer any recommendations for golf courses here? Since my wife doesn't play golf, where I wind up joining isn't going to be the ultimate deal breaker, but any knowledgeable feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'm retired and play 4 to 5 days a week, so where I play is definitely important to me.

In the areas mentioned above, golf courses I'm looking at include the following: Eagle Point GC, Centennial GC, Rogue Valley CC, Stone Ridge GC, Grants Pass GC, Dutcher Creek GC, Cougar Canyon GC, Roseburg CC, and Oak Hills GC. If I'm leaving anyone out, don't hesitate to add on to the list. I've only included 18 hole courses, as I have no interest in any 9 hole tracks.

Along the coast, golf course choices are definitely limited, although the Bandon area is intriguing. An unlimited annual membership for age 64 and over (I'm 70) at the highly rated Bandon Crossings, including golf cart, is just $2,300.

Anyone have any ideas???

You will have better weather inland compared to the coast. Literally sitting here watching the weather report and Bandon got called out for get upwards of 6" over the next week.

i don't know anything about the courses you mentioned, except for Bandon of course.  But all those areas you mentioned are nice. Typical drive to the coast is usually less than 2 hours.

I've considered Bend, Oregon as a potential retirement location.  Just not sure about how I'd like the winters.

Bend, Oregon is home to three courses ranked among Golf Digest magazine’s 2013-14 list of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.”

I think we've ruled out Bend and Klamath strictly because of the winters. We don't mind a little snow here and there, but both those locations get 35 to 40 inches of snow each winter. Places like Medford, Grants Pass, and Roseburg get 6" or less. I've been playing golf 12 months a year since about 1983, and I'd like to keep it at least close to that.

You're right, of course. Bandon, Coos Bay, and Brookings, as well as other Oregon coastal locations, all get 75 to 80 inches of rain a year. I think our best bet will be to focus on Medford, Grants Pass, and Roseburg, or smaller towns in between, Thanks for the input.

My vote would be Eugene, Or. Not so much for the golf courses, but because Fiddlers Green Golf Shop is located there. When ever I am in the area, I stop in there just looking for something to buy.

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
