Wire coat hangars, the white ones in particular. Simple things, will not hold "bends" when making trivial training aids.  I use one for shallowing out a swing path. They simply do not last. Now, I take the wooden coat hangars with the heavier steel cross piece (ones with pants clips), cut off the cross piece and bend in the directions I need (opposing 90 degs), to make a little "arm" that extends over the edge of a mat to hit "under". Cover it with a small diameter foam pipe insulation.

Jack Nichlaus used to promote something very similar if I am understanding your training aid. It was sort of a variation on the head cover exercise. The goal being to flatten out the plane before and after impact. Is that what you are describing?

yah, Martin Chuck uses something similar. He just takes a bit of "twisty pipe" from Home Depot, and twists it in a sort of spiral pigtail looking thing with an arm. It is free standing of course, but the least little breeze and it would blow away unless anchored.  Mine might fall over, but not really go anywhere. (unless struck of course)
