I have been playing with just irons for a while and need to really get a driver for next year.

I have used a driver but I am a bit useless with it so I want a nice easy driver to hit whilst I get used to using one.

Im obviously not looking to spend a fortune, so a couple of years old/second hand is fine. I have had a few lessons and have recently changed my swing so it is not the fastest of swings and my handicap would be around 20-25 if I had one (based on some quick calcs).

I have looked at quite a few but really can not whittle it down:

  • xhot/xhot 2
  • Cleveland 588
  • Cobra Biocell
  • Nike VRS covert 2.0
  • Taylormade jetspeed

Any thoughts? Or any others to add to the mix?

Cheers.

A new new/used driver won't change your driving ability. If you already have a 460cc driver take some lessons with it. Also try choking down on the grip some.

The best reviews are for the xHot(s) and Jetspeed.

It's tough to say which ones will fit your swing the best though.

I currently have a really old driver not a 460cc.

I do not really want to hit balls with my current driver as it will be gone in a month or so. Thats why I am looking for some pointers, before I go and get one.

I've had luck going 2 ways here...

1 - I found a Pinemeadow 385cc driver bought for $30 at Academy about 10 years ago. Good beginner club for me, consistent performance, very little $ investment. Feels good to hit a fairway 10 yards beyond my brother in law's ball which was put there with a $350 stick...

2 - Used 460cc driver. I'm currently playing with a Ping G5 driver that I bought at Clubfinders for $69. Better club definitely out performs the Pinemeadow on distance a little but after I learned to hit a driver, both did the job and served their purpose for me without spending  $400 or more on one club.

Ping G5 - 7w & 5-PW

I thought I would come back to this. In January I ended up getting a second hand Cobra Max driver (£35) from a club pro I know.

I went a couple of times in January and was getting around 135-150 yards, more recently I have managed to get to around 165 yards. Still a bit on the short side, but at least I am not losing a full shot or 2 on the longer holes anymore, more like 20-30 yards.

Distance will come with time and other swing improvements.  But being able to hit driver when it is called for is a step in the right direction.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
