Complete set of Callaway clubs: Should I buy

Greetings everyone,

HELP NEEDED! I'm usually not one to purchase a complete set of clubs together, but I found this set of Callaways on amazon. Would you guys mind checkin them out and tell me if you think its a good deal. Keep in my I would be buying them for a 10 handicap. Thanks!

Someone may have better info on the clubs themselves, but they are an older model and I have seen new 9 piece X2 Hot sets for half that price on eBay.  Looks like the same set without the bag and putter.

I would pass on it.  If it is a gift, maybe a $900 gift certificate to Golfsmith, Golf Galaxy, etc. would be a better way to go.

There are just too many variables.  Just a few are shaft material, flex and weight, club feel, cast/forged, game improvement or not... even the top line appearance all play a part.

If I were receiving them, I would really appreciate the gift, but I would rather pick out a set that fits my game.

I wouldn't go so far as equating it to picking out a wife for someone else, but there are those who would rather take a chance on the wife before taking a chance on the clubs... lol.

Buying anything that  needs to be tailor made to an individual is very difficult.  Be it clothes, golf clubs for a better golfer, all of them need to be customised on need.  Take the person's advice and see if they are happy with the specs.  If that is not possible give yourself an out where you can return the clubs or trade it in for something else in case the specs are totally off for the person.  If that is not possible, do you really want to take the risk of purchasing the set

A person who plays to 10 HDCP probably has fairly specific wants in golf clubs. As others have suggested, go with a $800 gift certificate, enough to start redoing one's set.

I agree with the others - too personal. And there are so many other easy ideas. Golf rounds, balls, gloves, etc that every golfer needs.

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

      I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

      Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
