  1. 1. What should I do?

    • Get the MP-57s
      3
    • Get the MP-60s
      3
    • order a combo set from Mizuno
      3
    • stick with what I have

I stopped by a local golf store yesterday to browse the merchandise hoping for some after X-mas sale. Got a good deal on a brand new TM RAC TP wedge for $80.

I had some time to kill and started hitting the Mizuno MP-57 and MP-60 on the indoor range. These clubs felt awesome. You can check out my signature to see what I'm currently playing for irons. I was just wondering if there are any recommendations based on my HC (around 13) and frequency of play (2x/mo during the summer. Should I get some Mizuno muscle or stick with my current sticks? I really miss long irons, and haven't been getting along well at all with the Hogan Apex hybrids.

I'll have to wait until income tax return time to get the new clubs if I decide to, but I've got the golf itch bad right now. Too bad all the courses are covered with snow.

Thanks for the advice.

Try the MP 33 irons, you can buy a set from ebay for around $300 used.

I don't think I'm shooting consistently enough, or often enough to hit the 33's and not get frustrated to hell.

Nice handicap for twice a month. If you can, save the money and use it on more green fees. You'll do a lot more for your game if you can just get out more. Otherwise if your looking for justification on the irons - go for it, you can't go wrong with anything by Mizuno.

Good hdcp for playing only twice a month. I would recommend an upgrade from the hogans to the 57's, as you will still have long irons and they are still quite forgiving (but nothing like a callaway, taylormade etc). And even if you decide not to get Mizuno, try a titleist 695.cb :D

yeah... why only twice a month? I recomend playing with whatever irons you hit well and like... and of course can afford. Personally I'm quite fond of the set I just picked up and I'm a 10hcp... see below

I only play twice a month as that is what I can afford financially and schedually. I'm hoping to increase that to once a week or so this next season, but it will depend on my work and other items. In college I played twice a week and had my handicap to around a 10, but gone are those days.

I appreciate the suggestions on this thread. I think I'll give the Hogans a full season to see how we get along. I'm hoping to get a lesson or two this year as well, and hopefully that will help more than new irons would.

IMHO, since you stated one of the reasons for not playing much is financial - I would save the money on new irons and use it for playing more. It will be more fun for you being on the course hitting your existing clubs than being at home staring at your new set - and better for your game.

Best of luck to you!

For what it's worth, I recently hit and like the 57's.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
