1.  What is the most important factor in club fitting for the driver?

2.  What is the most important factor in club fitting irons?

While the answers might include shaft, length, flex, lie angle other information might be about flight characteristics.

Don't need to be a club fitter to chime in, even if you are a higher handicap share some stories of how fitting helped (or hurt) your ball striking.

It's tough to say it is just one thing. I will put it is as a this, optimizing spin rate to launch angle.

Peak height. Those who swing slower struggle to keep the ball in the air long enough to get optimal distances on their irons.

I've had two driver fittings. One where all brands were in play, and one where I had won a Ping G30, so it was strictly about configuring the driver for shaft, type of head, loft, etc.

In both cases, I went to a reputable fitter and let them zero in on a fit, and he asked lots of questions (and responded to mine).

Not sure exactly what you are asking, but to me, the most important aspect for the buyer )not what you asked) is to walk out of there feeling confident that the session was successful. That depends on good communication between the two of you.

If my fitter didn't communicate well with me, I'd have been less confident that his expertise was very high. He asked lots of questions about my game, and showed me summaries of various shot groupings- explaining his thought process as we tried tons of configurations.

Frankly, I don't think he would've said one factor in my swing was most important. It seemed like an art sometimes to whittle down choices.

If there is one thing that is almost a given when it comes to drivers, it's that nearly everyone launches the ball too low.  I've fit over 12,000 players, and I can practically count on one hand the number of players who hit the ball too high.  Usually a high trajectory is due to excessive backspin...not launching it too high.  So make sure you get a driver with plenty of loft

For irons, don't underestimate the importance of lie angle.  Everything else could be perfect, but if the lie angles are not correct it will cause you to srtuggle

Thats so true. I have never really had my irons checked for lie angle and rely mainly on my set up, but I can tell whether I am too upright or too flat, problem is consistently finding the right one. If the clubs were fitted to begin with, at least my set up would be consistent.

i'm not that tall at all and when i got fitted for my AP2 716 last week. i brought in my blade with px 5.0 in em and the fitter was like wtf why would they fit me in those shafts. then i started to hit and he realized i was spinning the ball so much. then he told me that my attack angle was really steep so next hit i got my attack angle to -3 to +1 and the fitter was showing me how much my spin rate went down. so i tried a bunch of other shafts and clubs and ended up with Ap2 716 Px LZ 6.0 now i have drop 5strokes off my scorecard. fitter jus said he liked how i was able to change my attack angle was surprised that i could control my spin rate also. i did try out the new TM P770 it's very clean looking but it didn't feel like a forged iron in your hands. few days after getting fitted i hit the one length irons and i did like the way they felt so i might one day have to give that one length a try in my shafts.

when ever you get fitted, make sure you have got to hit every single brand of clubs that you have your mind set on, i forgot to try out the Callaway Apex pro16 and CF16. but im happy with what i have now

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
