Wanted to reach out for some advice... I coach the golf team at the high school where I teach. Neither my assistant or myself are PGA teaching professionals so we really try to organize practice in ways that encourage scoring. We practice on the course exclusively, and have the kids use range time to work individually with their instructors. I have posted below an out of season week practice plan as well as an in season practice plan. This is our first year and the program has not seen much success in the past. We are excited about some young kids on the team, but our scores have not been what they need to be in order to be in the top half of our league. (currently 5th in a 10 team conference thru 3 matches). Let me know of anything you guys can think of that we can implement to practice "scoring" better. Thanks in advance.

Out of season:

Monday- Drives, <30 yard pitches/green side shots. Drives- 2 points hit fairway, 1 point missed fw but has a shot to green, 0 points for OB/punch out. Green side locations- 3 points hole out, 2 points up and down, 1 point hole out in 3 shots.

Tuesday- Play every hole from 120-130 yards, par 3s as usual. (every hole is a par 3 essentially)

Wednesday- Play a 9 hole round from most forward tees. Must hit drivers when driver decision tree allows.

Thursday- 9 hole match play.

In season:
Monday- Match day

Tuesday- Either a Monday or Tuesday from above, plus challenge matches (match play)

Wednesday- Match day

Thursday- 9 hole qualifier for next match

Friday- off, but I am considering making this a practice day.

I would say this is hard to answer. What are players handicaps? Those with high handicaps focus on fundamentals...grip, stance, alignment. Better players I would get them playing and have them play for a score. If they shoot in 80's..see if they can break 80. If they do not have them count how many putts, what were the GIR.

Hope this helps as a start.

There is a lot you can do on the range.

Put sticks out there so they can check their start lines.

Play HORSE (or B-O-G-E-Y) on the range with crazy shot shapes - high, low, huge hooks, etc.

Get the school to buy a copy of LSW.

I realize that the school's budget for your team may not be very big, but I would see if they could buy several copies and have the kids read it....or require the kids to buy it....if golf is really their sport they shouldn't have a problem with spending a few dollars on it.

The book gives recommendations on drills for different aspects of the game and suggestions for the amount of time spent on each area. I you don't have a copy, that would be your first step
