Hi,

I have a few videos from my last round on last friday.
Sorry for the quality but it is filmed with an older digi-cam.

Please give me some input on my swings what I should change to get better.

Thank you!

Widen stance, don't press your club meaning don't push your grip forward just before you swing. also it appears you are breaking your wrists really early in the swing, but can't tell just from that angle.

do you hit alot of shots high and to the right? i say this cause it looks like your upper body is falling away from the ball and your club rises very fast after impact, like you need to stay down alittle longer through the shot.

Absolutly, that is one of the reasons that I am not as long as I could be!

How can I train to stay down during my swing?
it appears you are breaking your wrists really early in the swing

What exactly do you mean by that? In the backswing or the forward swing?

Yeah, might be a bit early to play those irons, but I really like them and I think it will help me more in the long view!

And I want to improve my game not my scores... at least not in the first spot!

when you set up to the ball just before you begin your swing, you push your hands forward causing you to sometimes close the face and open the face, this makes your body have to adjust causing you to pull up and hit the shots you are.

So I should try to avoid moving my hands forward before beginning the backswing? It's not that I am doing that on purpose!

I know you arent trying to do it. Yeah, focus on just keeping your hands where they are until you start the back swing. Just don't press forward and it should help.

just our of curiosity, why is forward pressing bad? I've seen a lot of people do it.

Even Dave Pelz mentioned it in his preshot routine.

Hello AnalogAG. Listen, I've had the same problems you've had before. My iron game depends on the following swing action. You seem to be spinning your hips way open on the downswing, thus your clubhead gets "stuck" or stays behind your body too long. This in turn will never allow you to square the clubface in time in order to ensure a clean hit and secondly, you'll never transfer your weight properly and get achieve much distance.
As a remedy, try to slow down your hips and let your arms catch up with your body. Try to feel like your left arm is pulling the club through impact. You'll notice immediate results. My thought is the simpler the swing the better.

Also, I'm sorry to disagree with others, but I don't agree with the statement that you must get new clubs. If you're comfortable with your irons, then keep using them. From the first day I played, I used forged players cavity backs. I'm thankful I did because I can't live without them. Currently using the Cleveland CG2's. Hope this helps.

Oh and another thing, you're casting the club. Don't throw the club at the ball with your arms. Use your legs in order to "hit" the ball. With the irons you want to swing down on the ball. With the driver, up.

Focus on one thing and one thing only, keep that left leg bent on the down swing instead of straightening it so quickly, you will get 'on top of the ball' as a result and will improve your strike and consistency.

Pressing the club forward isn't always bad andre, but what it can do is shut down the face and make you open the clubface. This causes inconsistence shots that really you don't understand why it's happening because you don't even realize that you are doing it. This makes your body have to play catchup with it will do, but not to the point that it should be at impact.

You should try to keep your swing shorter (specially with the driver) and widen up your stance. I think they are both pretty easy foults to correct, and I had them (and still have, but I cannot practice verry much though).

The reason why I'm saying that it is important to keep your swing shorter is becaus you are "casting" the club at the top of your swing, and from what I could see, the ball (with the driver) flew high (too high I think).

From what I observe only the 8 and 9 iron swing video for a couple of minutes there, I think you're using only your arms to initiate the backswing instead of your shoulder. The indication would be the wrist cock as the start of backswing. That's why you don't seem to have that weight transfer, it's all arms. Due to that you look like you're trying to lift the ball up in the air instead of hitting down, because the lowest point of your swing is at the center of your stance. I bet you rarely take a divot, or perhaps you're most likely to hit fat/thin shots. But if you transfer the weight by initiating the downswing with your left hips, the lowest point of swing will move a bit to the front of the ball and that means you're touching/scraping the turf, which means divot.

Just practice proper weight transfer from the beginning of a back swing, downswing, and follow through. You'll see how more of a consistent ball striker you could be. Hope this helps.

P.S: Oh and I think you're looking up too fast. Don't go for result, instead focus on the swing and the impact. Good result will come from good fundamental. Also with focusing on swing and impact, you'll eventually develop the ability to feel where the ball will go just split second before the ball is hit.

    • Day 3:  I tried to hit a bucket at the range but an 80 year old man (he told me his age, showed me his knee replacement scars, told me all about his chronic low back pain, etc) couldn’t pass up the opportunity to mansplain to me every little thing I’m doing wrong.  Dude, it’s my third frickin day.  I know I need to twist my hips more, I know I need to keep my head/chest down and not pop up, I know I need to hit through the ball and follow through further, yada yada yada.  I know.  That’s exactly what I’m trying to work on.  How about you tell me or show me how to do those things instead of telling me to watch Iron Byron videos?  Rough day.
    • Day 132: 5/7/24 Full Speed Spectrum Training session 8/24. 7th training program overall.    Another slow session but 4 mph faster than my last session, which was my slowest ever. Going to the doctor on Friday to check on pulled neck muscle.
    • Day 26: Did full swing practice after work. First 15 balls were working on top of the backswing feel, and then tried to incorporate transition feel into the next 15 balls. A's, although this will be my last season of being a fan as they leave for Las Vegas (by way of Sacramento for a few seasons). Hard to see myself rooting for the Giants, but if that's the only MLB in the Bay Area, I guess I might get on board.
    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
