Depends on the level you want to play college at. Back when I was in college (03-08) I emailed the golf coach at Ohio State. He said you needed a 2 handicap or better to even try out. That isn't to make the team, just to have a shot at it.

@Akman, it depends on too much to really list here.

My suggestion, since you're probably not looking to make a career out of golf… go to a school that suits your career objectives, and if you can play golf for them, consider it a bonus.

I would not place your golf above your education.

And yeah, if you were a 2 or even a 1, you wouldn't make the Ohio State team. :-)

Out of curiosity what level of player would you expect to make a team of that caliber? I know nothing about college golf and am too old to try out but am wondering exactly how good the guys at top schools are. +2, +3 handicaps, +4 handicaps?

I played with an all-American last week (last year I believe). He was a +5.

I played golf in college and it wasn't worth it. I went on scholarship to a school over 4hrs from home so there were very few matches my dad could come watch. If I had it to do over again knowing what I know now, I would have stayed home and went to my local satellite branch college and just played golf for myself like I do now. You miss too much class and you think too much about golf and not enough about your studies.

So many kids waste time and I know, because I wasted more than my share. Time is worth more than money. Nobody ever lays on their death bed wishing they would have worked more and made more money.

My advice to you would be to research a career path that provides a decent salary and a generous PTO bank. Go to school and go to class. It's amazing the grades professors give away just for showing up every day. Get a job and buy a modest home that you can pay off in 15 years or less. The more expensive the house the less money you have for golf. I work with guys whose house payment is triple mine and they have 30 year notes, mine's only 15. They also have utilities that are double mine because they had to have a big house. Then they cry because I have more fun in my time off due to more disposable income. I live like others won't so I can live like others can't.

Don't lock yourself in golden handcuffs.
