I like SOME of Clements stuff.  He's got the right idea with the swinging motion imo which is fundamental.

Comparing him to someone like Dana D would be like comparing apples to calculus exams.

If you like Clements Ron Sisson has a unique perspective also,  doesn't get much play though because people like all the minutiae.

i think people tend to think anytime they take a club and try to strike a ball they are swinging.

Thats the trouble.

It's interesting you bring up Ron Sisson.  I watched his 8 part video just before Christmas.  His before /after video is enlightening.  I think for absolute beginners, his approach is right on.

I rewatched the videos today after your post.  His approach and Shawn Clement's are very similar.  They both emphasize feeling the club head and swinging the club with out worrying about positions and individual body part manipulations.  The main difference is Simmons talks of the club head contacting the ball as the key focus that directs everything, while Shawn talks about swing to the target as the key focus.  The body responds to the goal.

What I like about Shawn's approach is he has practical drills that help to improve the swing overall--the feet together drill, one leg drill, walking drill etc.  These have helped me to stay centered while swinging fully.

Sisson's videos present a basic philosophy, but don't really go much beyond that.  He talks about things he does with more advanced golfers that help them to improve.  These steps he calls the "icing on the cake."  I view Shawn's videos as that icing on the cake.

Shawn provides more content for sure.  I've seen some of his stuff that I am not wholeheartedly behind though.  The feet together drill is a great classic drill.  With Sisson I don't like his repeated emphasis on the minuscule size of the sweet spot.  If I think that I am more likely to guide and less likely to swing...

What I really like about both guys is they both emphasize the underlying basis for mechanics which is the swinging motion of the club and both demonstrate their skill which to me matters.

I think a lot of times the body oriented modern instructors don't make a big enough emphasis on the importance of the swinging motion of the club and the benefit of spending some practice time using external focus.

If you practice a ton of time on range with swing thoughts/internal focus you will not be able to turn that off and play golf.  Your mental approach is conditioned to be a certain way.

Why not practice some of the time just letting go and swinging and see what happens?

Sounds lovely. Unfortunately for me this is always, 100% with deadly accuracy, a shank. If i think of nothing I can hit the exact (within a nanometer) spot on the hosel effortlessly. The two ball drill? LOL. Yeah, I perfectly shank the inside ball every time. It's quite an experience.

That sucks.  Maybe you are trying to make impact on the inside quadrant of the ball.  Maybe try and swing out to in hitting the outside of the ball and hit huge slices.  One guy I play with sometimes shanks and he swings too in To out.

I bet if you tried to hit huge slices they might come off straighter than you think.  I am talking trying to hit real banana slices.

Another idea would be take a club and load up a bunch of lead tape way out near the toe so you get a better feel of the sweet spot being swung instead of the end of the shaft.

Yeah, it's the bane of my golf existence. Regarding the OP I actually have noticed better ball striking when I 'forget my wrists' during the downswing. It seems they operate nicely without me putting any thought into them. However, as to what you recommended, I spent an afternoon on TrackMan and it showed me coming  outside to in, as well as too in to out both with a closed club face. So, I can shank either way. Astronomically frustrating.

The reason I say that is because my pro told me a story about a student who came to him shanking.

After time he found out this student had his clubs specially modified by an online instructor and these were old long hosel blades.  The instructors modifications included putting lead powder down the shafts for 'proper weight'.  So the cog was moved so close to the shaft the student developed a shanking problem.

So my theory would be move weight to the toe.  Just an idea off the top of my head.  Whaddya got to lose?

The path has nothing to do with what part of the golf ball you strike. It's entirely dependent on the clubface angle.

Why do I sense we're about to get a video from the 70's? Sorry. Ok @Jack Watson, let's go.

    • Day 7 - Mirror work, trying to hit that PGA-logo position in my follow through. Mirror really helped, need to film soon.
    • So hit the😝 irons crooked AND play layup golf?? Hahaha.. no thanks. I would rather stay home. 😊
    • First - glad to see these popping up again. Now to the topic at hand - I would rather be option 1.  If I know how far it's going (I mean a yard or two) I can always play to the wider parts of the fairway and/or the green and still do reasonably well.  Now if I could just really hit the "number" that well.
    • Day 2 (10 Mar 25) - Long day of driving to dr appt with son.  Thankfully got in one of my fave putting drills (two ball side by side) - the goal to have both balls come off the putter face equally by having them come off the putter face as close to the same time as possible.  First few rolls - the toe was leading the way as that ball flew off the face.  By the end of the drill both balls were basically equal off the face, rolling to within a couple of inches of each other.  Nice drill of focusing on squaring the face.  BTW - I was using the old Odyssey DF992.
    • Day 161 - 2025-03-10 Got a decent, long session in. Focused mostly on the backswing feels, and moved on toward the end of the four hours (not all hitting balls, I installed a motion sensing light switch in there too, and worked with a student over FaceTime for a bit) on the downswing feel.
