I golfed with a total stranger (to me) yesterday. He had a different way of reading greens that I have never seen before.

What he would do is read the green from behind the pin, while standing side ways. I asked him about it. He said he use to read greens facing the pin in the normal fashion. However,  when he got into his putting stance, his side view seemed distorted from what he had seen, when  looking straight on. He said he started doing this 15 years ago to solve the distortion problem. He also said, that when reading from behind the pin, to stand on the opposite side than your normal stance, so that when you address the ball, you are on the same side, as your read side.

Now, I don't know how much stock to put into his idea, but he did seem to read the greens quite well, even though it was his first time on them. He made quite a few breaking putts, and the ones he did miss were left quite close for tap ins.

Just throwing this out here for others who might want to try something different, for what ever reason. He beat me by 6 strokes, with fewer putts than I had.....on my home course.

I think that any attempt to read the greens with your eyes is bound to be somewhat flawed.

Use your feet. Learn AimPoint.

This. Aimpoint kinda makes all other methods obsolete. If you're going to spend time and effort in learning a new method, go with the method that will transform your green reading ability, and that's Aimpoint.

There is some merit to what that guy did from the standpoint of paralax vision. I have a condition known as "upper right hypervision" where if I tilt my head a certain way, I see double images or the images will separate. I can see how looking at the pin from a sideways reverse stance position might help. This may be partially why the aim point method works well for some people in using feel of feet rather than eyes. You gave me an idea though. My vision "separation" does not occur if I putt from opposite side, I might try out a left handed putter. I did so with current putter with good results, but kind of difficult off the back of the putter rather than the face.
