Ive struggled with keeping my golf ball on the green and rollout from chips and pitches when around it. Switched to urethane and lost a lot of height and distance on my shots. Eventually settled on Bridgestone e5. Phenomenal performance. The added spin certainly helped and I still got the same distances as my distance ball. (Maybe cus the e5 is a two piece?) But thanks to the idiots at Bridgestone discontinuing it, Ive had to re evaluate everything. Numbers dont lie and after switching back to distance balls, my scores average six strokes lower. Anyone else shoot lower scores with a distance ball?

P.s., and for me, side spin doesnt appear to have anything to do with it. I can hit a distance ball every bit as crooked as a tour ball :-P

I wish it was that easy... find the right ball and your handicap drops by six strokes.  Seriously though, it's not the ball.

Ditto. And hey, no offense @stealthhwk we all wish it was that fun and simple, but you gotta know a 21+ hcp isn 't gonna see such a drastic performance variation in balls except when comparing the extreme. Like, Titleist Balata 100 and a Pinnacle.

Hence why I started the thread. Its crazy! Last three rounds have been 92, 94, 94. Last three rounds with a urethane not called the e5 were 100, 99, 100. Even my playing partners were like what the hell!? Grip pressure is same, swing looks and feels the same, only difference any of us could notice was the ball. Maybe u guys are both right. Whatever Im doing different sure is working. If its not the ball, Idk what else it could be.

:hmm:

Unfortunately this is golf. That sentence holds no water. All those factors can be present and one shot will give you a flush, solid strike, the next a shank. I've been on the practice area hitting 3 large buckets solid as a rock. Literally hopped in my cart to go to the first tee for a nice 9 holes afterwards and it's like I've never played the game before. What are the chances it was the ball?

I would think that a two piece ball (e5) would have less spin of the driver thus maybe you are hitting it more often in the fairway which would make the game easier. I have found that I hit it straighter off the tee with some of those balls. In my humble opinion, there is not as much difference in balls these days because of all the technology. I still have my personal favorites that preform well for me WHEN IM PLAYING WELL.

My bag:

Taylor Made R7 (x-stiff).
Taylor Made Burner 2 irons (stiff)
Cleveland Wedges (gap and 60)
Odyssey two ball putter (white)

Who makes a balata ball anymore? FWIW, back in the day I played the Titleist Tour Balata 100's, but only when it was above 85*F. Under those conditions I still had the clubhead speed to make those balls work! Jeez, they felt great and flew like rockets!

But I do notice a difference in ball performance, and so do my friends. And for us, these days, we can't play the high cost, high spin, "players" balls.

Case in point. My friend hits the ball long, and high, He found a brand new ProV-1 that looked like it just came out of the sleeve, so he decided to give it a go. The profile of his approach shots started resembling the first big hill on a roller coaster! Everything wound up short. So, he went back to the ball that fit his expectations.

this is my 2cents

probably 99% of all golfer's could use a ball like a Top Flight Distance / Straight / feel or Maxfli speedfli or something that is a simple distance ball 2 piece mid to low compression... which there is a lot of them

And those Golfer's would probably score better or the same versus when they use a Tour type ball.....

I've been there, when my swing is good, i love using a 3 or 4 piece urethane ball... why?  because of how the ball works with short irons and wedges going into the green... hop n stop or getting some good back up on the ball..

I also know when to stick with something like a Maxfli Softfli / speedfli or Topflight straight, when my swing isnt so good... and going into the green with short irons, i can still get the ball to  hop n stop..but getting some back up on the ball not so much..

It is what it is

Now that you mention it DLY, a season or two ago I found a Top Flite labeled "Da Feel". I don't play Top Flites anymore, but it looked brand new (isn't it amazing how many lost Top Flites look that way?) so I stuck it in my bag. I pulled it out for a long par 3 over water, and Jeez that ball felt great! It flew like a rocket and would hold a firm green. Not at all like the Top Flite "rocks" I used to play back in the day!

    • They sure do. 158 with an 8 iron is on the high end for me
    • Went back to controlling my knees. That part was getting a bit sloppy when I worked on my backswing. Right hip didn't slide or gain internal rotation. I would just rotate back and around and the left knee would be in a bad spot. Really focusing now on keeping my left knee very stable and straighter in the backswing. I can't go back to the old pattern of overturning the hips. I was returning to my old pattern to time my downswing. Turn forever.  Left knee controls both knees and hips, acting as an anchor. Feel like it straightens a bit.   Hinge sooner and faster. Not in a way that sends the hands out and flips the club over. I still noticed when the hands get to A2.5, the hands would want to flip over and flatten the club out a ton.  Still trying to figure out how to roll the forearms a bit open and not just roll the club inside a ton.  Figure out the timing to get the hands down. Still getting a bit of right elbow collapsing in the downswing because the arms are too high when I turn. Everything is happening sooner now. If the hips are controlled, the backswing is shortened. Because it is shortened I don't know when to get the hands down and I just turn because the downswing is a go.  Very slow (50%) swings are decent.
    • Distances look fine, no?
    • Day 207-12 Wider backswing and arm reconnecting in downswing. Did a much better job with proper wrist movements through downswing today.
