Road to becoming a Pro golfer

Hi everyone 

I'm Po and I'm planning on becoming a professional golfer(PGA tour). I'm a 21 year old guy attending college at the moment. I'm gonna be using this thread as a journal of my golf journey. 

A little bit about myself. I've been playing golf on and off since I was about 14, was the captain of my high school team. However, when I got to college I decided to major in engineering so I had to put off golf for 3 years, until now. I've have started playing against last week since finals were over and I'm using a course near my apartment as a practice place. It's a short part 34 course, where on my second day I was hitting about 6 over. I'm planning on committing a  lot of time to that course to hone my basics and become a consistent hitter. 

My plan: 

- Hit the gym about 3 -4 times a week in the morning in order to maintain optimal fitness. Will be a mix of cardio and weight lifting. 

- Since the golf course has a membership plan where I can play as much as a I want(yearly) for $450. I will be going there everyday. They also have chipping and putting greens where I will be working on my short game. After I get better at my long and short game, I will be looking at more difficult courses in my area. 

- Dedicating about 20 - 25 hours per week to golf

I love the game and I really want to be able to play it professionally.

Wow, the definition of serendipity.  You decide to pursue professional golf and find TST at the same time.  I hope your plans include finishing your engineering degree and getting a paying job while pursuing your golf dream.

I too, recommend that you stick with your engineering while pursuing golf, unless you want to forever remain po...

What was your hc when  you were captain of your hs golf team? Fitness is of course important, but with a goal to pursue golf as a professional, I'd put less time in the gym and more on golf. Most importantly however is to maintain the engineering degree. A lot to juggle, but I think you can do it if you really have the drive.

Hi Po.  I too recommend completing your degree.  Completing things are very important and will provide stability when your professional career ends one day.  Good luck.

A few questions to ask yourself:

1)What are your golf goals leading up to becoming a PGA Tour professional?

State Championships? U.S. Amateur - Club Championships? PGA Tour at this stage doesn't seem logical. 

2)Are you one of the best amateur players within 100 miles of where you live?

3)Were you one of the best players ever in your school district?

My suggestion is that you take one step at a time. You are better of sticking with your developing love of the game rather than setting yourself a goal that is so lofty.

Is it possible that we've mellowed in our old age, or have we just been worn down?

Given that our current subject would appear to have say, a 15 handicap (6 over for 9 holes on a short course) and his prospective competiors would be five years younger and playing off +3 I would say it's fair to say that I have mellowed. Thanks for noticing.

Note, I did say we...

...ah well.  Sometimes it just feels good to stop beating my head against the wall.
