This is my new favorite TV show! It's just the level of insight I'm looking for into the world of higher level golf. It's great to hear about golf course management and the thought process of the pros. Hearing about golf swing technique is more harm than good, at least I think. In the shows I've seen it seems as though the pros shy away from that.

Last night I watched Jay Haas, that guy was good. He tore the place he played up too!

It's long been one of my favorite shows on The Golf Channel too. I always love the insight people have - why they back off on a hole, why they hit the ball in certain places, etc.

It's an incredible show. In fact, I'd argue that it's the best show on TGC.

I really enjoyed the show Gary Player was on. It came on a couple of weeks ago but I'm sure it will come on again. Well worth the watch. He is quite the comedian.

I think when you get a good episode of this show, it's worth its weight in platinum. My favorite, of the ones I've seen, is Nick Faldo's. I've got it recorded and just watched it again last night. When you get to hear these guys non-emphasize so much of the "swing" and just talk course management and feel and goals....it's really eye-opening. Plus, Nick is a riot - "...and then...just give it....some willy!"

Other good ones (or at least good moments from ones):

* Colin Montgomerie: He seems a bit of a stodgie dude but he had one pitch shot where all he talked about was the "management" of the shot, then just got over it and hit it, nice and easy. Completely opposite what I would have done not long ago. I would have driven myself nuts with the mechanics and club choice and never thought about all the rest.

* Gary Player: controversial guy right now but his episode was awesome. Just preached balance, balance, balance. From all different lies, stressed balance. Also had good advice on "reading" your bunker lie.

Anyone else have good shows/moments?

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

I like them all, but how much does an episode weigh?

If we take the weight of the Pro, the John Daly episode would outsell them all! Okay, back on the serious side... I like them all. I've never seen a bad one and, indeed, they almost all talk about non-mechanical things. I think that's the biggest overall lesson anyone could learn from them.

I like the ones with Jim Thorpe. Likes the ones with Fred Couples and John Cook too.
And the one with Natalie Gulbis, but not because she was any good at it

Oh, I forgot about Freddy's. Really interesting to hear him talk about all the swing tendencies he fights. My favorite exchange from his, though, was this:

[paraphrased]"You know a lot of people say, 'You must love the hot weather, to loosen up your back.' I tell them, 'No, because my back is stiff no matter what. I'd rather play in cold weather because then everyone else will be stiff, too!'"

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

Best show on tv by far. One of the best ones I have seen is Calvin Peete. The chipping and pitching advice he gives at the end of the episode is the best I have ever seen.

Given the talk on this thread saying good things about the show, I have to ask: if I don't have the golf channel, how do I see the show? Are they going to come out on DVD and/or online on demand?

I agree... I've never seen one I didn't like.

I like the ones with Jim Thorpe. Likes the ones with Fred Couples....

The Jim Thorpe ones were great... he seems like he would be a great guy to play a round with. The Freddy ones were insightful as to what he deals with. I agree that these two were especially good.

The Nick Faldo one is my favorite as well. I thought the Couples and Sorenstam episodes were ok, but they weren't as good as the Faldo one. (Like you I've got that one recorded and stored for repeated viewing

).

The golf channel does sell

DVD's of some of the episodes, but I have no idea why they are selling the ones they are, and not other ones. http://www.thegolfchannel.com/core.a...005&select;=252 (Frankly I wouldn't pay for DVDs with Daly or Omera in them).

You don't have the GOLF CHANNEL!

At school, my TV is hooked up to a DVD player, but I haven't television otherwise. If I want to watch TV, I have to go home to my parents' place.

I'll second the David Toms, episode. I really like his swing, he's just really smooth. Plus, watching him go through the fitting was pretty sweet, too. It reminded me of mine except he did not cough up $250.

The Christie Kerr episode was good, too. She's really good with her woods, is concise and clear in her explanations for why she's taking a certain club, etc.

The David Feherty episode at Whistling Straits was my favorite followed closely by Nick Faldo's.

At one point Feherty encounters a bunch of sheep on the course and yells 'come to papa girls, you know you want me, come to papa'. I do not know how that did not get edited out.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
