He had a couple of sizzling years on the West Coast with a bunch of wins. Great example of dancing with what he brung.

Oh, man! I remember an interview I read with Lietzke. He said his Driver was not allowed to know that it could hit a ball in any other direction but from left to right! The interviewer asked him what he would do if he absolutely had to hit a right to left shot. "3 wood!"

This reminds me of a greenkeeper I knew. Helluva great guy and good golfer. He and his close buds would go to Myrtle Beach every year for "Spring Fling", and wind up every year playing local NE Ohio courses for their "Fall Finale".

One year at the Fall Finale, he hit a loose shot into a relatively open area of trees just to the right of the rough. After he was wandering around in there, the other guys came over to help. They found his ball right away, and tried to point it out to him. He just kept wandering around saying, "I can't find my ball. I don't know where it is!"

They said "UH, OH" and called an ambulance, thinking it was a stroke. Turned out to be a glioblastoma. Wound up killing him!

Lietzke is pretty close to a natural talent, and the banana story is kind of the proof that he didn't have to hit 1,000 shots a day to play the game.
