Driving Issue

I'm currently having some major issues driving/getting off of the tee in general. A little background, this is my first year of playing consistently and I have made some major improvements. In general, my iron play is above average, and it is by far the most confident aspect of my game. But since the beginning of my golf progression, I have never done well nor felt comfortable with the driver in my hand, and this has led to use my long irons on tee shots which plays decently, but on long par 5's, it's a real challenge to make par. My issue has been a nasty slice, or just straight wiffing at the ball and taking a stoke. I personally can't stand hunting for balls due to my slice, as it hurts my confidence going into my second shot. I have been told that your swing should be uniform for all clubs, yet I cannot comprehend how that it possible for swinging such a large club. I recently purchased a Tour Edge 1 iron/wood and hope that I can get some more distance out of that, but it would be nice to eventually be able to hit with a normal driver. 

 

Like I said, my iron game is pretty strong. My shots are straight and accurate (for the most part), and if I do mishit, I can determine that it's usually from over swinging. I have gotten to the point where I feel like this issue is stopping me from being a pretty decent golfer and I don't know how to fix it. I'm 5'6, and sometimes believe that my lack of height is what makes swinging a driver feel so uncomfortable, as it's difficult to stand up on the ball being so vertically challenged. So, short golfers of the world: can you hit your driver? If so, do you choke up or take a different stance on the ball? Any general advice would be appreciated, but do know that I have dedicated many range sessions to my driver and have never left feeling better about the situation than before. Oh, by the way, I hit a set of older Dawia irons that I love and my driver is an older King Cobra model. I also use the standard interlock grip.

Welcome to TST.   We're glad you found the forum.   I'm not one of the experts of the forum but here's a link to some educational information.   This forum has a great wealth of information and the members are great trying to hep.

Read the "How To" section and if you are so inclined, post a swing video.   You will get your answers

Make a proper swing and hit the ball in the middle of a square club face.  You'll be fine if you can do that.

If you can't do that, then remember where your misses go into the woods.  It will make your golf ball hunting shorter in duration.  If you can't do that then play a cheaper golf ball and don't go searching.  Keep in mind that you should play quickly, there a golfers that can keep their ball in play behind you.

It isn't the least bit unusual for swing faults to reveal themselves, progressively, as the clubs get longer.  Invest a few clams in a lesson and explain, to the instructor, what you have explained to the forum.  That will give you a different perspective and a thing or two to work on.  Practice is a good thing; but we all need a nudge in the right direction from time to time.
