The past two years, I've taken my Division III college team to Myrtle Beach over spring break in early March.

We've played some pretty nice courses, but it's come at a cost to the kids of about $800 or so for the lodging/golf. And we've had too much free time to kind of goof around.

This year, I'd like to do something a little bit different, so we can better prepare for NCAA Nationals if we qualify again this fall.

Essentially, I'd like to make it golf-heavy. What does this mean, perhaps?

  • Stay at a place with 36 holes.
  • Basically spend daylight hours working on our golf games.
    • Play 18, 27, or 36 holes a day.
    • Practice a little (on days we play only 18 or 27).
  • We'll eat there if the food is good, especially lunch. Dinner we may venture out.
  • Practice facilities don't need to be awesome, but we should be able to hit some balls, chip onto a green-like surface, and putt a little.
  • Golf course(s) don't need to be world class. Just "decent."
  • I'm hoping to keep it to about $500 for the golf and lodging.

Any ideas? Where should we look? It doesn't even have to be Myrtle Beach… I'll go anywhere so long as it's within about 12 hours of Erie, PA and it will be warm enough (low 60s for the high temps at least?) on March 3-10, 2018.

Ideas? Thoughts?

Hilton Head or Lake Oconee area are worth a look. Plenty of golf in both of those places.

Thanks, I'll look into those. Do you have anything specific?

Hilton Head not only will have reasonably lodging prices but tons of great food and activities away from the course. Golf is not limited to on the island where you have courses ranging from $30-$300 per round. Quite a few of them are former private clubs so they have decent practice facilities.

Lake Oconee lodging would more than likely have to be a house. There you will find Reynolds Plantation which has over 100 holes plus a Taylor made instruction facility. Each course there has their own range and short game facility (could be pricey but would think they would be willing to work with you). There also are a few other cousin on the lake, Cuscowilla and Harbor Club are both nice while Cuscowilla was a top 5 course a year or two ago. You are only 45 min from UGA and their course is solid with a good practice facility.

Right, Reynolds Plantation. I thought that was there. It was a bit too late for me to get down the Google hole last night, so thank you for the shortcuts… I can take it from here on that.

And yeah, I was asking more about the Oconee specifics over the Hilton Head specifics. Those are decent ideas.

Honestly I hadn't even considered somewhere that wasn't Myrtle Beach. Your post was very helpful in changing that. Thank you.

Not sure if you've checked out Sea Trail before (in North Carolina, so away from MB), but they have 3 courses, I've played the Dan Maples and the Rees Jones courses, and they were both very good.

And I've also heard pretty good things about the Big Cats courses, of which they have 4.  Very close to Sea Trail.  And north of MB in NC as well.

Thanks. I sent them an email just now.

Ditto the Cats stuff. I've heard of those courses, yes. Thank you.

@iacas I booked a package through MBGolf last March, and was happy with it.  We paid about $550 per man for 3 nights/3 rounds (Caledonia, TPC, Long Bay).  The people at MBGolf were easy to work through things with, and they had a lot of options (lodging & golf).
