Seems like they are going from one extreme to the other - (the 78 yd par 3 was mentioned in another thread). Today they are playing a 303 yd Par 3, yes its a little downhill but still. I've never played a par 3 where I would need to hit Driver then wedge to get to the green. These young studs don't seem too phased by it, however.

Carry on my wayward drive

There'll be pars when you are done

Lay your weary wedge to rest

Don't you shank no more

Oakmont has, as you probably know, a very long par three. #8.

I love it. They should go from one extreme to the other to make it more interesting.

Especially in match play, par doesn't really matter. If you look at this as a likely 4 on your scorecard, then the "stress" of having it as a par 3 melts a bit.

It was playing down hill so they were reaching it easily with 3 wood and sometimes less. I like that the USGA went with some different stuff. A 78 yard par 3 and a 303 yard par 3 in the same competition, it makes for more interesting golf than the same 215-225 yard par 3's that we see tournament after tournament on the PGA tour.
