This is handy - just for you guys to use if you like (did a search here and didn't see anything like it)

http://golf-info-guide.com/golf-tips/equipment-choices/golf-ball-compression-chart-and-rank/

Since I'm a compulsive ball hunter and have so many, I thought it would be nice to see just what models of balls would be best for me if I run out of my ProV1's and V1x's.  I'm learning quite a bit.

For that matter, it's good to know which balls might also be better for me if I need to step softer when it gets cold.....

Also helps because I like to give some away to friends and now I can try to match the ball to the game they play.  Rather than just give away anything - even if it would be a terrible match.

I'm finding that even though I have literally hundreds and hundreds of golf balls that are like new, MOST of them are way too soft for my game.  I better get to selling them off.....

Thanks- the tabs across the top seem like good info on how to judge a ball for you. Any idea on the date of that chart? Do they keep it current?

I'm not an expert on balls, but I've randomly played a ton of balls, just because my father used to give me boxes of previously enjoyed balls that he found on the hole in his backyard during his evening walks. A couple off the top of my head I don't see listed:

  • Noodle (maybe no longer made?)
  • Snell (maybe not enough market share?)

Very informative and a great source to compare the many various types of balls manufactured.

All this chart tracks is relative compression.  There is SO much more than that to choosing a ball appropriate to an individual.  Sorry, I just don't see much benefit at all to this particular comparison...

Any information I can get on golf balls and what a good match might be is welcome. I use a lot of 2nd hand balls - either from finding them on the course to buying them used - but I've also bought several boxes of new value balls.

So far, I've taken a liking to the Wilson Staff Duo and a few of the other lower compression balls (Titleist DT Solo or TruSoft). I don't get any spin or check with my short game so I don't think a different ball is going to do anything for me there.

It would be nice to settle on a specific ball - and then work on not losing so many of them.

I didn't think that one chart was overwhelmingly helpful, by the way. I was referring to the general info on the other tabs. Perhaps basic to most people and common sense, but seemed to me to be a good explanation of a framework to help decide which ball works for you (distance vs short game and overall feel, etc).

Yeah, I felt that too.  But it's the best I've found so far and I've looked hard.  And even tracking compression is at least one data point that thins down the list for me by probably 80% - which is significant as a starting point.

And they do acknowledge it in the other tabs which are a good beginner discussion.  And on the compression shart, each ball has a 'detail' tab that offers more info.

If you have another resource with more info, I'd be thrilled to have it.  I'm still looking.

    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲
