I have seen some Taylormade Spider Tour putters show up on eBay, Craigslist, etc. They all look real, but I'm always skeptical when people say they received them as a prize, etc, and don't have receipts (though it is believable it could happen).

Are there fakes out there of this putter, or is it something they haven't bothered to try to fake? Is there an easy way to identify a fake?

There is a fake everything. The only way to verify is to buy it and call Taylormade with the serial number, or, buy it from a reputable dealer.

Taylormade unfortunately won't validate by the serial number whether it's real or fake. Very frustrating!

I might suppose that this is because scammers might buy one real club, and just run serial numbers off of it.

They could just go into a shop and get a serial number from a known valid club. No?

As far as fakes go, @kpaulhus said it already - there are pretty much fakes of everything out there.  The higher dollar items are counterfeited more than the lower ones. Because there's so many spiders out there, the only way to spot a fake would be to have a side by side comparison with a known real one - until you get good at it. The only surefire way to steer clear of counterfeit merchandise is to buy from authorized dealers or manufacturer direct.

Counterfeiters generally have trouble lining things up or making words sharp. This is because the real thing has real tools - counterfeit usually uses less quality tools to do their markings. In the case with scotty camerons, it's almost ALWAYS in the lettering at the bottom. The taylormades will be the same way more than likely. If the bottom wording looks sketch, stay away.
In addition, may forgeries don't have removable weights. You can ask for the weights to be removed and shown to you.

Taylormade will note if it's a real serial or not, but as was said above, you can get a real serial number from anywhere that sells them. Walk in, write down, walk out.

I wonder if the fakes all use the same serial number?

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
    • No! Is a large part of the human population selfish, apathetic and cuts corners in the name of self-preservation 'more than they would like to admit', yes. Degenerate, scum, etc?.. no!! Most humans/men would not grope a woman like Phil is accused of doing (I think he absolutely did). That is scum. I mean what % of men do you think would do that? Seriously??
