Coming down to Raleigh this weekend, playing Treyburn CC on Sunday and Monday, but looking for a place to play Saturday afternoon.  Have played Loonie Poole which I liked, but looking to play somewhere else.

There are club corp courses in the area which I can play, has anyone played them?  Are they any good?  Are there better public courses to play?

Heritage Golf Club

Nuese Golf Club

Bentwinds Golf and Country Club

Lochmere Golf Club

Devil's Ridge is having a M-G, so can't play that one.

Thanks for any suggestions.

At Easter Mary Anne and I played at the Heritage Club near Wake Forest.  We did it because one of our previous Assistant Pros had moved into a new position there, and we wanted to see him.  Its a nicely conditioned semi-public course. a reasonably demanding design, but not hard enough to slow play too badly for less skillful players.  Here's a link:

Do you recommend it or are there other courses you've played which are better the closer you get to Raleigh?

I haven't played in Raleigh since I got out of grad school at NC State in 1979.  The course I used to play back then is now a housing development.  I enjoyed playing Heritage, but I wouldn't call it outstanding in any way.  Its just nice.  A similar distance south you get to Tobacco Road.  To the east, a friend has highly recommended Benvenue CC in Rocky Mount.  Its a Donald Ross design, apparently built in the 1920's.  I'm not sure where you're staying, or how far you feel like driving, but that might be one to look into.  Its private, so you'll need a call from your home pro, but I know you can arrange that part.

Treyburn is part of the McConnell golf network. Raleigh Country Club is also owned by McConnell Golf. It is the last course Ross built. Try to use whatever connection you used to play Treyburn to get you on RCC. It is a really fun course, and I wouldn't be surprised if you like it better then Treyburn.

Have you checked out Lonnie Poole?  It's one of the few courses I've played over there.  Played it a few years ago and really enjoyed the layout and conditions.  A little different in that it is a very "natural" type of course and minimizes water usage...but, I think, a solid track.  It's NC State's home course.

EDIT:  My quick reading/idiocy.  Just saw you had played it.  Sorry.  Move on.  :pound:

Fairways and Greens.

Yeah, played it before, really liked it, was hoping to try a different course.  Was hoping to get on Raleigh CC or Carolina CC, but you have to play with a member, so no reciprocity there.  I've also played the Duke course which was very nice.  And I've played Treyburn 5 or 6 times, that is a great course.  And that is where the tournament is I play in every year.

I'm going to ask our pro to see if they can get us on here.  This looks like a really nice course and it's right off 95 and near 64 for going to Raleigh.  Thanks for the tip.

Benvenue CC is a great course.  Classic Donald Ross, not long but small crowned greens, good placement of bunkers, lots of trees.  Loved it.  Would recommend to anyone who can get on.

This is 18.
