I've been using GolfPadGPS on my iPhone with a Pebble on my wrist.

I'be been generally satisfied but marking shots with club specific data is cumbersome and distracting.  It can't be done from the Pebble, so it requires the phone to come out.  I need reading glasses, so the button pushes to record a shot with club data is even more cumbersome for me.  Without glasses I can see the yardage on the Pebble, which for me is the most important bit of info when I'm playing

I do get glitches on occasion; sometimes the yardage is clearly not correct.  I don't know if it is a phone or app issue.  I very much like the ability to login after the game and seeing the sat image of the hole/course with an overlay of my shots.  I can see how knowing the club for each shot would be beneficial.  Because I did try it from the phone for a short period, I do get some club suggestions, but it is older data so it usually suggests the wrong club (I'm learning the game, so my club distances are improving).  I don't know if GolfPadGPS adapts over time as the club performances change.  They just came out with their tag system this year and I'm skeptical.  Tech support is sketchy at best.

I'm considering a tag system so I don't have to fumble with the phone while I'm playing.  I'd prefer to leave the phone in my bag, which if I'm riding that day could end up being a fair distance from where I am when I'm taking a shot.

Game Golf seems pretty popular here, is that the gold standard?  What are other people using?  Are they all pretty much the same?

Thanks for input and feedback

Hi Brad,

Here's my opinion and experience (I gain nothing from pushing one product over another):

A few years I got the bug to look into many of the golf GPS stats tools. I used GolfShot, Golf Logix, SwingXSwing (helped with their beta program). Eventually, I felt like they were cumbersome on the course with all the fidgeting with my phone, and they lost their appeal.

When Broadie started putting out his numbers on strokes gained for various lies and distances beyond just the putting numbers, I monkeyed with a tool that helps us DIY our own analysis. Informally, on this site, I worked with a bunch of bogey-golfer types to see what we could learn from this DIY thing, and compare it to what we were getting from stats tools.

Overall, I have a problem with every product's ability to give us the information about our golf games. It's tough to find a balance between ease of use/simplicity and the detailed/flexible presentations that can be garnered from the massive amount of data that they're sitting on.

That's why I've tried to dive in and write some articles found here: https://thesandtrap.com/b/the_numbers_game

I figured I might as well put my money where my mouth is and try to tease some good information from the data that the tools collect. For these articles, I chose GAME GOLF, as I've had some experience with them, and they are a market leader, last I checked.

I point all that out just so you can see my experience with this stuff and share some of your thoughts on how cumbersome or buggy it can be.

Bottom line: I can speak for GAME GOLF and tell you that it'll meet your needs. The phone isn't needed, and you can play golf without a hassle. To get the most out of it (I'd argue get the MINIMUM out of it), you'll want to use a computer interface later to edit each of your shots, move the pin and ball locations on the green, etc. So there's some work. But the product is a good deal to me. It works well, and if you stick around here, it'll help you "speak the same language" as most of us. Lots of threads here about GAME GOLF- not so much on the other tools.

Hope that helps.

Yes it is and if you care to view rounds of others, simply click on the GG icon for the person.
By viewing others, it will familiarize you with the capabilities it offers.
I use it to keep stats as a performance indicator of my game.
In general, when you ask a person how their game is, they usually reflect on recent rounds.
By using GG I'm able to reflect on trends as I play through the summer.
This helps me concentrate on aspects which are becoming habitual in either the right direction or wrong. It also indicates areas which need attention for me to play and score better.

Many like the ability GG has for viewing shot zones for every club.
Other features are viewing proximity to the pin on approaches.

Head over to threads / discussions about GG and you will discover other opinions.

All of these devices are prone to GPS errors, for instance, my last round I was teeing off from odd locations.

Of these devices, I have to agree with others that GG is a really good device. You can also download the application for free and it used to have really big buttons to press when tagging a club. The tags are ideal because you just tap them. They cost around $50 for a set and you can use the NFC on your phone.

OP I have used GG and currently use Arccos. What has been said above is my experience as well. GG for me worked just as well as Arccos. I went with Arccos because I liked not having to remember to tap anything, but when I was doing it, it was not that big an issue. Both are going to have some missed shots and/or bad GPS readings just because of nature. I actually nearly went with the Sky GOlf Game Tracker a month or two ago just to try it, but it was out of stock, so I can't speak to that one, but my guess is it's about the same.

Arccos will talk about its Caddie function, which sounds really cool, but the reality is it has a long way to go. I support it, but honestly, it has a ways to go before anyone should make the decision to buy Arccos over GG for that part of the program.

Bottom line, both are good at what they do. I can't find where there is much difference (right now) between the 2 on stats, so pick one and roll.

I can't speak for Game Golf I use Arccos and I feel like the information is valuable.  If you need reading glasses I think Arccos on the course would be a problem.  I edit as I go and there is some editing for sure.  If you can remember every shot and edit after Arccos may work.  I use a Garmin watch on the course and over time I have compared it to lasers and it is very accurate.  Arccos does not always give the same yardage as the watch.

Good luck

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
