Here i go. I would like to replace my three wood because my current one's paint is all off and i would just like an upgrade. I wand callaway and it is down to the x series or big bertha. I normally hit my 3 off the T because i can't hit my driver i currently have and i don't want to pay 300 for a new one that i can hit. So which 3 wood out of those two would you pick? Also with all the new callaway stuff coming out do you think all the 2007 stuff will drop down in price? Dick's in my area already has the graphite Big bertha down too 179 but i would like it to get around the $100 mark. If there are any other 3 wood suggestions let me just say that i don't like a very thin face like some of the woods have.

Of the two you mentioned, I would say that the Big Bertha might be a bit better for you off the tee, but you might find the X series a little more effective from the fairway/rough. If I recall correctly, the BB is slightly bigger and has a larger and deeper face; I haven't hit it, but the reviews were generally very good. You might also consider the X Hot (good Sand Trap review of it here ), which most folks thought was incredible off the tee.

For around $100, you might have better luck on an auction site like eBay or the Callaway pre-owned site . Also in that price range, you'd probably be able to pick up an '04 or '05 Big Bertha. The '04 was smaller and steel-headed; I had one and loved it. I think the '05 had a larger (though not as big as the current one) titanium head.

Good luck.

Callaway has a pre-owned site, and you can purchase from there. Don't get rid of your 3-Wood, which you apparently hit well at the moment, until you find another that you can hit well. Finding a 3W that you hit well and that gets along with you is too important to abandon. You'll notice that even pros, who are paid to pay new clubs and can try - at no monetary cost to them - as many as they want, get new ones fit perfectly to them, and so on, tend to stick with one three-wood for a long time. And get fit for it first. Don't just get whatever they're selling. There are tons of people who get the newest each year, thinking it will make them a better player, and just end up with stock stiff shafts in a tragic mis-fit. They can't figure out why the club isn't the magic they paid for. And then they sell them back, and you might get the same stiff mis-fit shaft.

I really didn't like the newer big bertha. I preferred my friend's old big bertha steelhead plus

That being said, I haven't hit the x or the x-hot (which i know you didn't mention) but I've heard pretty good things about both, especially the x-hot off the tee

If you can find one I would try the Callaway Steelhead III or the TaylorMade V Steel, both at 15*. You can buy the V Steel on EBay for less than $100 and then go get fitted for a shaft. I got a V Steel for $50 and with a new shaft I will have a 3W for about $130.

I went to buy the X model and after hitting it off the launch monitor the sales guy said that it would not be the club for me because of the shaft and too much backspin. I picked up the X Tour 15* and bingo...the rest is history. The monitor said I could get 240 out of it from the fairway and the next tournament I played in I put it on the green from 240 (and missed the eagle putt).

Just for reference my swing speed with the 3 wood was @ 97 mph and the shaft is the Tour Platform (stiff). My driver is the 454 with the nv green stiff shaft that I bought because I hit it great on the driving range. I went back after I bought it and sure enough, the launch monitor agreed with me. The point is to make sure you try one out before you buy.

I would go with the X. Not all drivers cost $300 dollars. Touredge made a new driver called the geomax and it costs $199.99. Touredge is not a huge company but they do make a good club that is reliable. The geomax is a driver that has an M.O.I that is close the the Sasquatch sumo driver

If you are looking for a three wood as a tee shot club... I recommend the Big Bertha... if you want to get around the $100 mark... this will sound strange to all of you people but the Dunlop LoCo is not a bad club... neither is the Nike T-60 which if you look around you may be able to find for around $100... I've had mine for a year and a half... and its hard to part with...

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
