My son and I are both about 5' 10" 145 lbs and would like to buy one decent beginner/intermediate set.I know very little about golf I don't see myself buying a few clubs at a time, like to keep it simple and buy all at once. I look on ebay and am overwhelmed. Used clubs would be fine. I'd love for someone to say here is something specific that's a good quality, good value set. Like to spend 200-400. I'd like to get the by xmas. Appreciate any help. Thanks

Welcome to the site. Lot's of good info on this site.

I am not up on any recent club technology, but if I had an under $500 limit on a set of "new" clubs, I would look at the Tour Edge products. Just my own opinion of course. I have used their products for decades. I am particularly impressed with their service after the sale. Quality, and playability has always kept me happy too.

Try looking at Dicks Sporting goods if you have one near you. They carry both new and used clubs. I saw a Cobra iron & hybrid set for $300 in the used rack and hybrids were still in the wrapping, (probably a demo set). Now that set did not include driver/woods of course, just the irons and hybrids. You'll also need to look at wedges and putters but the guys at Dicks, (at least by me on Long Island, New York) are really good guys to talk to.

If you want to buy on line you can try Monark golf, they sell club components but also built clubs.

I would be careful on eBay although I have purchased there as well.

Good luck in your hunt and welcome to the site.

The quickest way to enter golf would be with a boxed set. Most golf shops carry them.

The shops often have a demo and display model of each set, so you can try out the clubs before you buy them. At a good golf shop, the fitters can tweak the clubs a little so they fit your swing.

Some popular boxed sets for under $400:
Tour Edge HP-25 // Callaway Strata // Wilson Profile XD // Top.Flite Gamer

Some boxed sets have no sand wedge, so you would want to get one. Other than that you would be good to go.
