"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

Day 12: 9/12/2024

Been travelling around the great state of Ohio visiting customers today, so no range time for me.
So, I got in front of the mirror with some PVC pipe and worked on backswing for 5 minutes. Then switched to a 7 iron for 5 minutes. Then a driver for 5 minutes. Most of my focus was on keeping control of my right knee which for what ever reason likes to do it's own thing on the backswing. Yoda gave me a swing thought back about a year ago that I focused on during my backswings.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Day 133 (12 Sep 24) - Worked on chipping with the 54 and using the "battlechip" setup in the backyard.  While there are three "net" zones - largest being the hole, focus was to have the ball land on the face or just in front to release up and on.  Did get in some full swings with the irons working on tempo - hitting into the net.

Day 134 (13 Sep 24) - Rain, rain, rain - so no trip to the course for the Friday men's round.  Did manage a few swings with the 9i into the net, before the downpours started, focused on tempo and getting good weight shift.  Once the heavy rain set in, worked with the putter in the shop on the carpet - putting from about 10' into an old icing cup (slightly smaller than a standard golf cup).  Some good work on getting solid alignment and pace.

Okay so today was putting drills on the mat day. I used gates, and I used the putting mirror. Finally I finished up but using the perfect putt.

Day 14. September 14th, 2024

My daughter and I went to the driving range today. Didn't really work on anything. We just hit balls at targets and had fun.

Day 135 (14 Sep 24) - Grandson came home with a David Ledbetter Swing Setter (early 2000’s double click magnet).  Thought it would be fun to see how well I clicked.  Supposed to click when you set and again when you release at the bottom of the swing.  Found it to be fun and challenging.

Day 136 (15 Sep 24) - Got in a solo round late this afternoon.  With a solid ENE wind of 10-15 mph it was about playing the wind - hurting wind going out (played 2 clubs up), helping coming in (played 2 clubs down).  Shot a solid 80 (39 front / 41 back).  The most fun was hitting tee shots and approaches that rode the wind.  A great afternoon of course management focused on working with the wind.

Day 137 (16 Sep 24) - Rain (another one of those tropical things rolled in south of here…worked on what I like to call “dink and roll” using an 8i in the bedroom (have about 15’ of distance) - hitting little chips (flying about 6-8’) and rolling out to auto return putting cup.  This drill replicates just off the green drills where it’s too tall to putt and you only need it to roll a short way.

    • Day 269: 9/17/24 Indoor chipping followed by slow motion swings working on weight shift. Each day begins with a Par4Success workout.
    • Oh my, no. It's a wedge second shot. Your angle into the green doesn't matter. You should not be aiming for the "side" of a 30-yard wide fairway to give yourself a better angle to hit your wedge shot. Or almost any shot after that. If the mounds on the left were a pond, or horrible bunkers, sure aim left. But they're not. If teeing off from the right side gives you confidence, cool, but the angle changes like 0.5°.
    • Do you practice through the winter? You're really not even likely that far from Erie… I have a number of students who make the trip every 3-6 months.
    • I have decided to try to play through it. I will put some older clubs into the bag and try to swing away! Winter will be here soon enough!
    • I’ve bought club repair supplies from Golfworks and it’s always been quality stuff.  Dipped into the build mode for a few clubs as part of an experiment - used their TS1 forged heads (8i-9i-PW) along with Apollo shafts  - long story short the clubs turned out well and fit my game well.  Regarding the Maltby Playability Factor table - I’ve tried to understand it and how they arrived at the numbers.  I am still confused….
