Day 3 8-17-2025

60 minutes

Used net and tripod in backyard . I would do rehearsals, swing, and then go check video. Noticed I had some old habits coming back up in backswing hip movement. Spent 20 minutes working on it, then spent the next 40 minutes primarily on backswing length and not over rotating.

Day 8 (August 18).  Context:  I am visiting family for this week and three weeks in September (with a trip in between).  So I don't have access to my home things, which are hundreds of miles away.  Of course, I brought clubs and a ruler (see yesterday's practice).

This morning, I went to go check out a practice facility.  I shared a 35-ball bucket, working similarly to what I work on at home, except I got to do so outside (still off a mat).  The 20 or so balls I had took me about half an hour to go through, and at the end, I wonder if my pull issues (and maybe hook issues?) were alignment issues.  At some point, I don't know if I was set up properly, maybe I need to use two alignment sticks?

I was also able to chip and putt, although I didn't do any drills for these.  It's nice to find a place with a great practice facility so close to somewhere I will be on a regular basis!

Worked on setup in mirror- getting weight more on balls of feet, and grip.

Day 322 - 2025-08-18

Played parts of 18 holes today with a few students. Made some longer putts, some chips, hit some decent wedges.

Day 9 (August 19).  Hour of practice session;  split a range bucket (I was working on my usual, although also working on alignment, which I think is somehow worse for me on range mats than on grass), chipped and did some putting too.  This was outdoors, off of mats (for the full range;  putting and chipping were off of grass).

Day 24: short range session to prep for a match tomorrow. Focused on start line and curve. Not too bad, but contact was pretty meh. Hope it better tomorrow.

Day 10 (August 20).  Ruler drill with the putter;  I am still getting the majority, but not all, going straight on the ruler and hitting a pillow a few feet away.  I'm not sure if I've hit diminishing returns or if someone of my ability level could get it up to 25/25.

Day 6 8-20

Worked on swinging club back and forth and letting chest and momentum "move" arms to top in backswing. Used mirror, tried hitting foam ball, not ready for that. Recorded some slow swings face on. Excited to keep practicing this drill.

Day 24: played 18 and won a fourball match to advance to the finals. Hit the ball fairly well, could clean up some putting. Made one of the best birdies of my life on 16 to flip the match.

Day 11 (August 21).  Practice session this morning;  chipping for a while (focusing chips that aren't "on the number" for me --- I'm very comfortable with 20 and 25 yard chips, less so with 15 and 10).  Then full swing work, shared a small bucket.  For my share, I was focusing on setup and where I'm aiming.  It dawned on me that I've been hitting some really nice drivers and woods lately, as far as contact, flight, and distance, but not getting them where I want them to go, and the conversation from yesterday's Spin Axis podcast (nice to finally be caught up!) made me realize I wonder if I'm adjusting my aim for the difference in swing path.  I definitely put my woods closer to my intended target line today;  not sure if that means I'm adjusting for a pull or aiming correctly though. 😕

      Day 14, April 22.  This morning, before going to work, I took the time to hit two dozen balls (indoors, off the mat, into the net), all with a 6-iron.  As before, this was focused on the pelvis separation and the length of the backswing -- yesterday's video view was encouraging that I'm making progress.

      I enjoyed the distance wedges episode. It's something that I've not really taken the time to figure out for sure, but I went to a local trackman place over the winter and tested my four wedges (PW, AW, 54, 58) and got four yardages with each one. I am using Dan Grieve's method - you have a 1, 2, 3, and "full". The number references the number of clubhead widths between your heels.  I never really got to grips with the clock method - I'd find my 9:00 one day would go 40 yards and the next day 60 yards purely based on how fast I happened to swing it, but I couldn't turn that off and I was basically at sea with the speed method (Wesley Bryan does this - he takes almost a full swing for a 15 yard chip). The Grieve method I set my stance width and that really limits how much my swing moves back and forth and the speed seems to be naturally more consistent.  Anyway, I wound up with four yardages for each club - PW 48, 80, 112, 127; AW 41, 73, 101, 112; 54 36, 57, 91, 98; 58 28, 47, 81, 86 So, in order, I have 28, 36, 41, 47, 48, 57, 73, 80, 81, 86, 91, 98, 101, 112, 112, 127 which gives me a pretty good set of numbers. I do have a big gap from 57 to 73, but I can do a 2.5 58, which is giving me about 64. Then as they noted you can give it a bit more, or grip down on a club too to adjust a little bit. It's really useful and very freeing to just know what to do. When you have a 54 yard pitch, rather than pulling my 58 and thinking how hard is 54, I can just take my 54, do a "2" swing and just grip down a little and I'm in decent shape.  Incidentally, Erik talked a bit about watching Scheffler picking off his yardages to within a yard. I've watched DJ do that too with his wedges. Scottie does it trying to hit it all the way up to like 200 exactly with a 6-iron and he's hitting it 200.5, 199.7, etc. Absolutely mind blowing how good his distance control is. Insane.
