I will be going to Punta Cana for a few days in late May and early June and would like to have any insight/opinions of the courses that will be close to our target resort location. They are:

Iberostar Golf Course
Punta Blanca Golf Club
Cana Bay Golf Resort

I've golfed in Mexico at a resort last year so I know what items to bring but I'm looking for insight into off-season rates (May-Oct), club rentals, any discounts on tee times if staying at corresponding resort (Iberostar) and personal experience at any of them.

Any insight is much appreciated!

Thanks,
Mike

Cana Bay is related to the Hard Rock Resort - if you stay at HR and have resort credits, you pay a service charge of $40. I brought my clubs because rental is $50/day for some Cobra Clubs. Balls cost a lot so bring your own. If you run out, the security guards on the course will sell you what they found for about a $1 per ball.

I just returned from the HR and Cana Bay was in good condition but the greens were furry. They had intermittent rain for several nights so I did not think they'd mow. Course is as long or short as you want it to be. Fairways are generally fairly open - only the wild ones will go OB. It's a Jack Nicklaus course, so the design is a tad nutty on a few greens. I played the 6750 tees in soggy conditions and long approaches were challenging. But the white tees are more reasonable, and they have red markers if you want to drive a few greens. They have some challenging par 3's and some of the par 4, you've got to fade to avoid water. They have a good range but no targets but do have a short game and putting areas.

We took a day trip to visit my client's friends and played Teeth of the Dog. 8/18 holes on the ocean. Pretty and challenging.

70-85F weather; I did not want to leave...

I golfed Punta Espada on my honeymoon back in June. Course was amazing and I dont have anything negative to say. Here is a thread with some pictures and more thoughts about the experience. It was pricey but worth every penny IMO.

Cana Bay Pics -- Number 8 Par 3 - 200-215 of fun - I just put it in fairway and was hoping for a par, at least a 4; No. 10 Par 3 - 185 yd thrill - better keep it right over the rocks.

    • Day 16: range night! Worked on long game for about 40 minutes, with a good solid 20 minute focus on my priority piece. Things improving there. Bookended that with some wedge and driver work. Finished up with about 30 minutes of short game. Working on distance control and all types of shots and lies. Short game is probably as good as it has ever been.
    • You should be able to install it yourself, honestly. You could easily blow it on and use some one-sided duct tape or something so it stays in place. That's what I've done with one of my grips.
    • Day 22 (12 July 26) - worked on putting tempo today using metronome for accurate tempo.
    • Hi all, My Edel putter seems to have developed a rattle.  I don't think it's a big deal, as I mostly hear it when I'm tapping down ball marks on greens.  However, I am debating getting it fixed, especially as I intend to play a lot of golf in August and September, and to continue playing regularly after that of course too.  My issue is I think fixing it would entail the fixer (golf shop repair station?) removing the grip and, presumably, applying a new one.  My problem is two-fold.   First, I like the grip on it, although after eleven years, maybe it's worth replacing.   The bigger (second) issue is getting the grip.  I don't like the flat-fronted putter grips anymore.  I have the round one on my putter, and I suppose I could buy one from Edel's website, but would a golf shop install a grip I bought elsewhere and brought in?  Or could they order one if Edel is not a supplier of theirs?  I don't recall ever seeing any Edel products in a Roger Dunn or PGA Superstore, although the era when I would go to a store and browse has long since ended (for better or worse).  I'd also wonder what the timetable is, as I'm leaving for a seven week trip in under three weeks. Any suggestions on what to do would be very welcome, whether about the rattle or the grip, together or independently.  Thank you!
    • I'm glad to know that picking up grass and letting it go doesn't help.  It felt like it shouldn't, but I'm glad to hear there's a good reason why.  It makes sense that wind is different higher up than it is near the surface. For a while, I was in the habit of checking the prevailing wind direction before playing.  That helped if I wasn't sure.  However, I still am not really sure whether something is a 5% wind or a 10% wind (and, of course, I know that a "helping" wind helps about half as much as the same wind hurting).   One of these days, I'll learn how to figure out what to do differently if the prevailing wind is 10mph vs 20 mph.
