I've been working on my short game with the Phase 5 system by James Sieckmann.  So far, I really like it and it works for me.  The part I'm getting the most out of is the Distance Wedges.  For those not familiar with the program, one of the things presented about distance control is back swings of two fixed lengths per club and dialing in your distances and having options for any given distance within X amount of yards, call it 130 yards and in.

My question is, has anyone familiar with the phase 5 system applied this concept to other clubs other than wedges?  I understand that everyone should have a known distance for each club. But, I'm thinking a 70% effort 7 iron with a 9 o clock swing is much more consistent and easier than a full nine iron, a 70% 5 iron with a 9 o clock swing better than a full 7 iron, etc etc.   Other than holding greens, is there any reason or reasons that this would not hold true.  Short of an actual drought, I generally play public courses with very receptive greens.

I would go and try this out myself. But, until the weather changes, I'm just going to think about it.

If you play courses with open fronts and are very receptive to the ground game by all means it could probably work out just fine. However, holding greens is mighty important and trajectories would play a major factor in that.

Sounds very similar to Dave Pelz's system. Three different back swings, with the same club, gives the golfer three different distances. This is the reverse of the P5 system.

The difference being with the P5 system that a longer club, with a shorter swing, is more accurate than a shorter club, longer swing. In essence, some what of a punch shot that in the right instance, is a better way to go. In the right instance to hold the green, the P5 system would work.

What makes sense to me is for the golfer to use what ever shot they have, that does the job for them, consistently. This to me is an individual decision.

I hit alot of punch shots, and/or flop shots when ever I can. The punch shots roll to a stop on the green, while the flops drop, and stop on the green.  This, if I hit them correctly, which of course is the challenge.
