Hello everyone! After some time off the golf courses, I finally have the chance to play again, which makes me very happy. From some years ago my swing has changed and I haven’t updated them, so I thought that it would be a nice idea to get fitted and see what can new clubs helps.

I thought that my game was going to be bad but, last week I shot +4 (with a triple bogey and a double) in nine holes and 79 in 18 holes (2 triples and 2 double bogeys). So yesterday I went to the fitting cause I think that I’m loosing driving distance because my driver it’s quite old, +10 years.

But what surprised me was the distance. I already knew RPM’s were high with my driver so I want something that gets them lower, but the distance was my main shock. My swing speed was around 110 to 113 mph, the lowest being 107 mph (the first ones) and I think the highest was 115, thou the distance was 264 yards total.

I was like, ok, I was not expecting that but ok. RPM’s were around 3,500 to 4,500. Then they gave me the M4 and made some adjustments, the head felt nice but then again, distance was the same and the RPM’s the same. He told me it was my swing.

This is not to show off but I was a bit confused since in the course I play there is a 320 par 4, uphill and I en dos up in the front bunker. My ball with my driver never rolls. But ok, if that’s what the monitor says, I’m good. Then i look in the web and found that some charts said that for that swing speed 280 yards is normal.

The I hit some irons, my 7 iron and it was going 170 yards with a lot of spin. I don’t recall the number exactly but were high. Then they have me the new AP2 irons with the S300 shaft and it went 206 yards with a lot less spin.

So, this is we’re my confusion starts, how come with an iron the RPM’s can lower more than half from my previous iron and with the driver, they don’t?

Unfortunately we don’t have here a lot of places where to make fitting and they don’t have all the clubs combinations. But now I’m hesitant if I should buy that driver or look for a trip to US to find a good fitting and buy it there. What do you think?

Thanks!

Well, you may be hitting it severely downwards. With a driver, you’re actually better off hitting it neutral or better yet, upwards. A large majority of players hit the driver downwards and couple it with that speed it would make sense how much backspin you’re getting. A low spinning head and shaft designed for lower spin may help, but if you’re still swinging far down a shaft/head combo isn’t going to be a magical fix.

Does a fitting make sense? Sure it does. Especially if your clubs are not doing what you think they should be doing.

I get everything rechecked every couple of years. If for no other reason than one less excuse for a poor shot.

3500 for a driver is a lot of spin. With your swing speed you probably want to be in the low to mid 2000's. You are definitely losing distance by most likely hitting down on the ball. Did they ever give you the angle of attack for the driver?

How much spin? With your swing speed, you should see around 6500 to 7000 rpms for a 7 iron.

They probably got the ball to launch a bit higher with less spin. That is possible.

The driver is at the bottom end of the spin due to its low spin loft. You won't see that dramatic of a spin reduction as with a 7 iron. Driver club heads are similar, but iron club heads can be drastically different in terms of how the ball launches and the spin it produces. To summarize, there is a lot of variation with irons, less so with driver.

If you hit down on the ball with the driver, it will be tough to drastically reduce your spin rate.

Thanks guys. I don’t remember the Angle of Attack but yes, I have that issue of hitting down with the driver.

And as for the fitting, I mean, I know they work, in fact I confirmed something I guessed, my irons were 1 degree upright and I felt that my swing wasn’t fitting anymore. And yesterday I confirmed that, so they are taking them back to standard. And changing the grip.

About the 7 iron, I don’t remember. I remember there was a 7,000 rpm number but don’t remember if it was with mine or the new one.

What it’s bothering in my head is the driver, I think first I should fix he AoA with the driver and see what happens with my actual driver cause there was no difference in the distance and then, I should look for changing it.

So, how can I fixed that? If you can share some links, would be awesome.

Thanks!
