For the roughly 2.5 years I’ve seriously golfed I’ve had one putter and these attached photos are it. I’m actually in awe at my own stupidity for never seeing how off this putter is. I assume this isn’t normal and that the flat side of the grip should be perpendicular to the putter face.

Ideally, yes, the flat side is pretty square.

I prefer a round putter grip. 😄

In many ways, I think, a putter is the club in the bag that is most like a snooker (pool) cue. World championships in those sports have been won with old $30 cues with a twist in them, because they felt right to their owners.

How's your putting - with this old putter?

That said...yeah, the face should be square.

My putting is horrendous. I’m definitely not placing sole blame on the putter, that’s for sure.

I’ve made some really big recent strides in identifying key issues with how I grip the putter as well as general technique that I hope take me from god awful to just bad at putting. I’m pretty much only self taught as well, and I think the content out there about putting particularly technique isn’t quite as extensive as the full-swing and chipping/pitching mechanics.

In that case bin the thing, go to a pro shop or a Dick's or somewhere, try a few putters and see how you get on. It needn't be an expensive club - but a mallet (with a square face) may inspire confidence...

Seems like it could help with a pull stroke. You can always spend extra time practicing your release 😜

Yep, I plan on it. I’m also at odds with the balance of this putter. It seems like a very high portion of the weight resides in the heavy putter head which for me results in more torque on my wrists and a breakdown in technique. Funnily enough I was at Dick’s earlier today to pick up a divot tool (I apologize to all golfers for not having one for close to 3 years, a capital sin) and given that I am in the market for a putter; I quickly tested a few out. Well, they all felt preferable to what I currently have. They still had some heft and could assist in moving the ball but felt head light and didn’t provide unnecessary torque.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
